Abstract The social environment is a key factor that influences behavioural traits across wide array of species. Yet, when investigating individual differences in behaviour, studies tend to measure animals isolation from other conspecifics—even Surprisingly, whether measured are predictive individual-level behaviour groups still poorly understood. Here, we repeatedly risk-taking (i.e. boldness; 741 total trials) both the presence and absence conspecifics lizard, delicate skink ( Lampropholis delicata ). Further, manipulated food availability during group trials test effect on was mediated by competition over resources. Using 105 lizards collected three independent populations, found repeatable either or within with without resources available. However, were bolder not also groups, regardless resource availability. This largely driven plasticity, whereby skinks responded differently conspecifics. Together, this resulted rank order change types conditions. Our results highlight importance mediating animal personality varying levels these findings suggest isolation, may reflect variation more ecologically realistic groups.

Abstract Within populations, individuals often differ consistently in their average level of behavior (i.e., animal personality), as well response to environmental change behavioral plasticity). Thus, changes conditions might be expected mediate the structure personality traits. However, it is currently not understood how traits conditions, and whether this effect consistent across multiple populations within same species. Accordingly, we investigated variation two ecological contexts invasive delicate skink (Lampropholis delicata). Specifically, lizards from three different were repeatedly measured for individual activity group assays under differing levels food availability. We found that context had a clear on lizard personality, where rates repeatable absence food, but presence resources. The difference repeatability appeared largely driven by an increase among-individual variance when tested was only true one tested, with having no expression other populations. Our results highlight important role mediating suggest may vary among

Abstract Male competition conforms to a cost–benefit model, because while aggression may increase reproductive prospects, it can also the risk of injury. We hypothesize that an additional cost in aggressive males would be parasite load associated with high energy investment into sexual competition. Abstract Host behavior and parasite infection reciprocally interact, but this dynamic is rarely studied experimentally in the field with multiple behaviors. We investigated interplay between parasitism host via an situ experimental tick infestation of a wild population sleepy lizards, Tiliqua rugosa. Using Bayesian models, we assessed relationship lizard aggression boldness before after infestation. First, tested whether prior to predicted probability attachment experiment. Second, evaluated affected subsequent boldness. found that related interactively infestation: for unaggressive higher was associated reduced success, opposite occurred aggressive individuals. increased did not affect post-infestation aggression, tended increase Taken together, these results highlight potential feedbacks parasites multi-dimensional

Behavioural syndromes receive attention from many disciplines for their potential evolutionary significance. Personality traits and behavioural often vary among species even within (i.e. between sexes populations). Whether correlations behaviours emerge as an adaptive response or a developmental constraint, however, is still debated. As foundation future studies to test the versus constraint hypotheses, we investigated repeatability covariation of aggression boldness two genetically distinct populations eastern red-backed salamanders, Plethodon cinereus, in those populations. Abstract Animal communication can be complex, often involving multiple static and dynamic traits. The extent to which these traits are correlated elucidate their function as either redundant or messages. Using the agamid lizard, Psammophilus dorsalis , a model system we examined patterns of trait expression role steroid hormones in mediating during social interactions. We staged male-male interactions lab measured repertoire display behaviour colours, change dynamically visible ultraviolet ranges different body regions. Additionally, testosterone corticosterone levels before after trials. Our results show that within colour categories, components were strongly individuals, suggesting shared physiological pathway information content. However, across correlation varied. chromatic contrast (yellow) dorsal region lizards was with both size level aggression, whereas UV patches only. also found negative association between baseline levels, yellow contrast, mechanistic link interaction induced uncorrelated behavioural displays itself. Notably, intensity males matched by opponents. Overall, our suggest signalling ensure redundancy well provide messages receivers, thus improving robustness transfer, particularly competitions have high fitness consequences.

Abstract Theory asserts larger brains facilitate behaviours that enhance fitness. Research has demonstrated increased brain size improves cognition and survival. However, the majority of research focused on cross‐species comparisons. Experiments manipulate selection to investigate connection between size, behaviour fitness are needed. Trinidadian killifish ( Anablepsoides hartii ) live in communities with (high predation: HP) without (killifish only: KO) predators. Predator absence is associated high population densities, intraspecific competition evolved sizes. We tested for evolutionary shifts by subjecting second‐generation lab‐reared a mirror aggression assay. also quantify transplanting wild HP KO sites tracking individual (growth rates) mark‐recapture design. Lab‐reared from sites—specifically males—exhibited higher levels than killifish. In transplant experiment, exhibited strong increases following introduction sites. Parasitism among individuals in a population often varies more than expected by chance only, leading to parasite aggregation, which is parameter of paramount importance dynamics and particularly vector-borne epidemiology. However, the origin this phenomenon yet not fully elucidated. An increasing body literature has demonstrated that vary consistently their behaviour, referred as animal personality.Such behavioural variation could potentially lead different encounter rates with parasites. To test hypothesis, relationship between personality burden ticks (Ixodes spp.) bank vole, Myodes glareolus (Schreber), was assessed.Wild rodents (eight females 18 males) were live-trapped, identified, sexed, weighted, inspected for ticks.Behavioural profiling then performed using standardised tests measuring activity/exploration boldness combination automatically manually recorded variables summarised multivariate analyses. The resulting descriptors questing tick used explanatory negative binomial generalised linear models Bayesian simulations better estimate coefficients.Tick associated mass sex, but descriptors, mainly activity/exploration.These results are discussed regarding complex relationships individual personality, physiological status, space use health status.

In many contexts, the interests of nonhuman animals (hereafter “animals”) are often overlooked or considered to be a lower priority than those humans. While strong arguments exist for taking animal moral claims seriously, these largely go unheard due dominant anthropocentric attitudes and beliefs. This study aimed explore how might best represented in human world. We conducted interviews investigate people’s perceptions what it means speak other who can reliably represent interests.
