Blue foods from aquaculture are essential in bridging the protein gap to feed human population future. However, for production be sustainable, must within planetary boundaries, and sourcing of sustainable raw materials is a key driver production. This article explores role single-cell proteins (SCPs) derived microorganisms aquafeeds. Three main aspects discussed: sustainability, scalability fermentation technology, fish performance. In addition, through comprehensive proof-of-concept trial with rainbow trout ( Oncorhynchus mykiss ), this demonstrates SCP’s efficacy replacing traditional ingredients without compromising growth health. The trial’s findings demonstrate high digestibility balanced amino acid profile, as well health benefits measured oxidative burst response. To date, commercial adoption SCP has been hindered by costs need substantial investments scale technologies. sustainability landscape changing large industry players openly commit targets realize that longer-term investment thinking into future needed. conclusion, emerges promising avenue aquafeeds, offering solution supply challenge boundaries. terms environmental benefit, shows clear advantages regarding land use, carbon emissions, biodiversity impact, water consumption. A variety of new feed ingredients are emerging in the aquaculture sector. While technology readiness these options varies across and within ingredient classes, it remains important to consider them terms overall spectrum. In this review, use marine, grain, terrestrial animal by-product a range novel (e.g., bacterial yeast) resources being considered as potential protein feedstuffs for aquafeeds is explored. comparing nutritional attributes each an assessment framework applied based on understanding critical knowledge required be able accommodate any formulation process. To further examine different classes Strength-Weakness-Opportunity-and-Threats (SWOT) analysis applied, enable some consideration what future may exist spectrum risks opportunities they bring. It noted that all have strengths weaknesses, there no such thing perfect ingredient. By better appreciating positives negatives ingredient, becomes possible increase adaptability responding various their feeds.

In order to explore the effects of probiotics on water quality, growth performance, nonspecific immunity, digestion, and intestinal flora Macrobrachium rosenbergii in biofloc culture system, three groups (six replicates each group) were set up divided into no bacteria (control group, Con), Bacillus subtilis (BS), effective microorganisms (EM) current experiment. After dissolution water, carbon source (glucose) was evenly sprayed aquaculture tank construct a with C/N 15. A total 1260 giant freshwater prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) an initial body weight (2.09 ± 0.03) g randomly assigned 18 tanks (70 per tank). BS group EM significantly reduced nitrogen concentration. Both increased final mean weight, gain, specific rate, but decreased feed conversion rate rosenbergii. plasma superoxide dismutase, lysozyme, acid phosphatase contents, malonaldehyde content. serum content trypsin activity Chao ACE index species richness. abundance Chloroflexi Verrucomicrobiota. Bacillus. Overall, adding affected microbial community. The results showed that is good probiotic additive.

Single Cell Protein (SCP) is a potential replacement for traditional protein sources in both food and feed. This review specifically focuses on SCP produced by bacteria, emphasizing its unique advantages such as rapid growth, high content, efficient manufacturing, genetic flexibility, thorough strain characterization. Notably, among other microorganisms, Methylobacterium species have recently been found to be crucial synthesis. The examines the feasibility of incorporating sustainable substitute diets aquaculture cattle production closely analyzing fishmeal soybean meal. Additionally, it highlights importance ongoing research supportive legislation, while also considering economic policy factors assess financial viability production. concludes outlining future prospects outlook derived from species, providing forward-looking perspective evolving applications SCP.

The development of sustainable aquaculture relies on replacing marine raw materials like fish meal (FM) and oil (FO). Emerging alternatives, such as single-cell proteins alternative lipids, offer promise. This study explored the effects partially substituting FM with 10% bacterial protein (Methylococcus capsulatus) completely FO a blend poultry (PO) DHA-rich microalgae in European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) unselected (WT) selected (HG) genotypes. results indicated that had no adverse impact growth. HG group demonstrated better growth feed conversion due to genetic selection. also analysed dietary genotype body lipid composition fatty acid profiles. Notably, lower levels major acids (EPA, DHA, n-3 FAs, LC-PUFAs) their fillets, but not whole-body composition. These differences influenced sensory qualitative aspects. Electronic analyses (the first e-sensory profiling conducted for purposes fish) showed more significant diet WT group, less variable pattern e-tongue score group. volatile profiles differences. In summary, combining genotypes innovative feeds is step forward aquaculture. It maximizes nutrient utilization, enhances growth, improves product quality. approach becomes increasingly important scenarios limited FM/FO availability, promoting sustainability

Single-cell ingredients (SCI) are considered promising nutrient sources which produced using environmentally friendly biotechnological processes. The aim of the current study was to evaluate replacement fishmeal, plant protein sources, and fish oil with SCI in organic feeds for European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax). Bacterial protein, yeast microalgae were used replace fishmeal trimmings, soya bean meal, from trimmings. Triplicate groups (30 per replicate) (14.4 ± 2.4 g) fed experimental diets 71 days. results showed that incorporation at all levels inclusion significantly enhanced digestibility. Additionally, growth performance parameters not affected by inclusion, exhibiting similar or improved values. Moreover, a tendency anterior posterior gut structure observed significant increase lysozyme activity two highest determined. Overall, 15% (bacterial: yeast: algae-9.4: 4.7: 1) is possible without compromising any evaluated. According these findings, higher substitution trimmings (D. labrax) can be further evaluated future studies.

Abstract Fish meal (FM) replacement is essential for the sustainable expansion of aquaculture. This study focussed on feasibility replacing FM with a single‐cell protein (SCP) derived from methanotrophic bacteria ( Methylococcus capsulatus , Bath) in barramundi fry Lates calcarifer ). Three isonitrogenous and isoenergetic diets were formulated 0%, 6.4% 12.9% inclusion SCP, by 25% 50%. Barramundi (initial body weight 2.5 ± 0.1 g) fed experimental 21 days to assess growth performance, gut microbiome composition histopathology. Our findings revealed that both levels SCP induced detrimental effects fry, including impaired reduced survival compared control group (66.7% 71.7% 50%, respectively; p < .05). Both dietary treatments presented mild necrotizing enteritis subepithelial oedema accumulation PAS positive, diastase resistant droplets within hepatocytes (ceroid hepatopathy) pancreatic atrophy. Microbiome analysis marked shift microbial community potential opportunistic genus Aeromonas . Reduced overall performance highest level 50% ) was primarily associated feed intake, likely related palatability issues, albeit pathological changes observed liver may also play role. highlights importance meticulous optimization aquafeed formulations, need species life‐stage specific assessments ensure health welfare fish aquaculture practices.
