Abstract A new approach for the formation of binary and ternary mixed metal oxides, namely, CoNb 2 O 6 , NiNb Co 0.5 Ni Nb through a modified single‐source molecular precursor route was investigated. By optimizing annealing temperature, heating/cooling rates holding times, phase compositions thermal processing mixtures oxalate‐based complexes [M(bpy) 3 ] [NbO(C 4 ) ]Cl· n H (M = 2+ ( 1 or/and ); 11, 12) (NH ]·3H were evaluated. Phase‐pure columbite oxides 1− x 0, 0.5, 1) obtained in one step by heating two or three oxalate at 1200°C 10 h with rate 10°C min −1 . The (micro)structure, morphology, optical properties as‐prepared materials characterized powder X‐ray diffraction (PXRD), field‐emission scanning electron microscopy (FE‐SEM) ultraviolet–visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV–Vis DRS).
