Abstract The term depression is overused as an umbrella for a variety of conditions, including depressed mood and various psychiatric disorders. According to diagnostic criteria, depressive disorders impact nearly all aspects human life are leading cause disability worldwide. widespread assumption that different types lie on continuum severity has stimulated important research subthreshold in later life. This view assumes precursor disorder. present narrative review argues why might either (i) with among people vulnerable disorder or (ii) be ageing-related epiphenomenon underlying physical illnesses who resilient (‘discontinuity hypothesis’). Three arguments discussed. First, the course differs across span. Second, screening instruments have low predictive value Third, dose–response relationship not been consistently found detrimental health outcomes. Using may partly explain pharmacological treatment less effective increasing age, negative health-related outcomes overestimated. discontinuity hypothesis prevent overtreatment milder subtypes stimulate comprehensive multidisciplinary assessment well development separate algorithms
