Abstract Aims To estimate the contemporary trend in prevalence of sarcopenia and evaluate its risk factors longitudinal associations with multiple chronic conditions mortality among Chinese middle‐aged older adults. Methods This was a nationwide, prospective cohort study using data from China Health Retirement Longitudinal Study. The definition based on Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia 2019 algorithm. In cross‐sectional analysis, we estimated weighted 2011 to 2015 examined associated severity 2011. assessed between 14 during 9‐year follow‐up. Results remained consistently high overall population (15.9%, 95% confidence intervals [CI]: 15.1, 16.6) (15.0%, CI: 14.3, 15.6; p = 0.075). A range were independently sarcopenia, including age, female sex, lower socioeconomic status, smoking malnutrition, several conditions. Possible sarcopenic individuals had higher odds (i.e., heart disease, lung memory‐related disease) increased risks (possible sarcopenia: ratios (OR): 1.66, 1.37, 2.00; OR: 1.69, 1.36, 2.11) 9 years Conclusions investigated population. Various significantly sarcopenia. Sarcopenic mortality, highlighting that urgent need dedicated efforts improve management patients.

Abstract Background Sarcopenia is a skeletal muscle disease primarily associated with ageing and progressive decline increases the risk of falls. The purpose present study was to investigate factors, including sarcopenia, for severe falls compared non-severe In addition, we wanted explore possible associations between bone mineral density (BMD), adipose tissue as well clinical scores assessing frailty, nutritional status, fall risk. Methods This retrospective cohort included 101 older patients that had experienced incident during in-patient care at geriatric ward 2018 2020. incidents were categorized into or Clinical data, assessment retrospectively obtained from participants’ medical records. Body composition, quantity (SKM), tissues, BMD assessed abdominal CT-scans performed any reason maximal 6 months before after fall. Skeletal index ratio (SMI-ratio) calculated using SKM cm 2 /height m divided previous described cut off values sarcopenia. An SMI < 100% indicated Results group showed higher grade sarcopenia (SMI 71% vs. 83%, p = 0.041) lower, though statistically non-significant, BMI subcutaneous (SAT) (BMI 22 [20–24] 24 [22–27] kg/m , 0.108, SAT 95 ± 70 cm² 141 94 cm², 0.124). Overweight more common in than (43% 14%, 0.048). correlated negatively frailty positive following body composition measurements: intramuscular-, subcutaneous, visceral (IMAT, VAT). No correlation other nor spine T-score found. multivariate analysis, level male sex lower BMI, VAT remained factors low ratio. Conclusions These results underscore importance addressing related malnutrition, management prevention elderly population. analyzed could add value this assessment. analysis be conducted opportunistically CT scans purposes.

Loss of skeletal muscle strength and mass (sarcopenia) is common in older adults associated with an increased risk disability, frailty premature death. Finding cost-effective prevention treatment strategies for sarcopenia the growing ageing population therefore great public health interest. Although nutrition considered important factor aetiology sarcopenia, its potential and/or still being evaluated. Nutrition research utilises three main approaches to understand muscle-nutrition relationships, evaluating: single nutrients, whole foods diet effects - both alone or combined exercise. Applying these approaches, we summarise recent evidence from qualitative quantitative syntheses findings observational intervention studies healthy adults, those sarcopenia. We consider protein supplements, (fruits vegetables) Mediterranean as exemplars. There some beneficial supplementation ≥ 0·8 g/kg body weight/d on when exercise training sarcopenic adults. In contrast, function (strength physical performance) inconclusive. reasonably consistent epidemiological suggesting benefits higher fruits vegetables consumption better performance. Similarly, adherence studies. However, are lacking. This review discusses how current may inform development preventive optimal nutritional policy aimed at combatting

Abstract Background Frailty and sarcopenia are important conditions that grow more common as people age. Frailty, a multi-system illness linked to heightened vulnerability stresses, sarcopenia, loss of muscle mass function, both raise the likelihood unfavorable health outcomes including disability or death. This work’s objective was study clinical utility frailty in critically ill elderly patients with multiple comorbidities. Patients methods Clinical scale SARC-F questionnaire were done 70 admitted geriatric ICU hospital. Results There highly significant effect on primary whether present not (which means is prominent than sarcopenia). The associated factors admission cause, type comorbidities, outcome (mortality, prolonged hospital stay, long-term care) found be important. presence regarding mean age, degree frailty, higher percentage for need noradrenaline treatment patients, relation patient mortality. Conclusions risk death critical increased by frailty. examinations should routinely identify sarcopenia. By providing appropriate therapies, medical professionals intensive care units may able improve outcomes. Clinicians get prognostic information survival recovery their frail unit assessing at time admission. Crucially, this might assist families making well-informed choices course while they condition. investigation needed ascertain there modifiable elements enhance prognosis sick fragile people.

ABSTRACT Introduction This systematic review/meta‐analysis evaluated the impact of sarcopenia in patients with cirrhosis before liver transplantation (LT) on outcomes after LT. Methods A search was conducted six medical databases until February 2022. The primary outcome overall mortality LT, while several secondary including graft survival and rejection, need for transfusions, length intensive care unit (ICU) hospital stay, surgical complications were evaluated. Sub‐group analyses meta‐regression also performed. Results Fifty‐three studies review, which 30, 5875 patients, included meta‐analysis. All cohort good/high quality Newcastle‐Ottawa scale (NOS), our analysis no publication bias found, although there substantial heterogeneity between studies. Muscle mass assessed using skeletal muscle index (SMI) 14 studies, psoas area (PMA) seven (PMI) four prevalence pre‐LT ranged from 14.7% to 88.3%. Pre‐LT significantly associated post‐LT (Relative Risk [RR] = 1.84, 95% CI:1.41,2.39), as well a high risk infections post‐LT, complications, fresh frozen plasma (FFP) ICU stay (LOS). Conclusions is strong factor clinically meaningful adverse Assessment may help identify at highest poor who benefit targeted interventions.

Observational studies have demonstrated a strong association between sleep disturbances and frailty. However, the causality remains inconclusive. We aimed to investigate bidirectional causal relationships frailty measures employing two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis. Two-sample MR analyses were performed based on large-scale genome-wide (GWAS) of European population for index (FI) (N = 175,226), Fried Frailty Score (FFS) 386,565), insomnia 283,595), duration 445,966) apnea 523,366). conducted estimates using inverse variance-weighted method (IVW), with sensitivity MR-Egger, weighted median, mode, pleiotropy residual sum outlier (MR-PRESSO) Cochran's Q test was assess heterogeneity. found that genetically predicted FI associated shorter apnea. Glioblastoma is a life-threatening primary malignant brain tumor with an unfavorable prognosis. Contributing factors to its poor outcome include heterogeneity, low mutational burden, and immunosuppression within the microenvironment.
