Abstract BACKGROUND Several bird species involved in commercial trade of pets Brazil, have presented occurrences outside their natural habitat, which may indicate possible introductions due to this activity. In context we sought evaluate the factors that influence public’s interest wild birds sold as and relationship those with new distribution area, discussing environments. METHODS We compiled richness traded Brazil obtained comparative data public directed these through Google Trend tool. addition, gathered on biological attributes sale price trade, analyze would be related interest. New range were considered only if they at a minimum distance 800 km. Thus, then used assess whether there was occurrences. Data analysis performed using Mixed Generalized Linear Models (GLMMs). RESULTS The results indicated certain varies according region country, suggesting profile by people internet can guided sociocultural each location. found is greater for songbirds, generalist diet, live more open environments, area are lower prices. All factors, except also showed CONCLUSIONS public's preference from environments probably most important data, such generally environmental tolerance, favor establishment actions aimed conservation commercialized essential reduce interregional species, consequently impact populations potential introductions.

Seahorses are unique, charismatic, and threatened fish that inhabit some of the most vulnerable marine environments. In Brazil, three seahorse species recognized as with extinction; however, knowledge their ecology conservation is unsystematized patchy. Using PRISMA protocol, we performed a systematic review existing literature on Brazilian seahorses to assess current distribution, life history aspects, threats, efforts, while also identifying research gaps proposing future priorities. By accessing 289 studies, found significant population ecology, habitat preferences, particularly for Hippocampus patagonicus H. aff. erectus, including critical taxonomic uncertainties latter. Despite being studied in country, reidi lacks updated large-scale studies. We evidenced major threats Brazil: fisheries (both targeted incidental), trade, destruction. Furthermore, highlight emerging anthropogenic disturbances, such tourism-related activities, potential stressors populations. Weaknesses framework, regarding regulation monitoring these require attention. Our findings provide important insights direct management actions Brazil. emphasize need comprehensive studies address uncertainties, clarify distribution patterns, understand waters. Abstract The surge in internet accessibility has transformed wildlife trade by facilitating the acquisition of through online platforms. This scenario presents unique ethical challenges for researchers, as traditional frameworks in‐person research cannot be readily applied to realm. Currently, there is a lack clearly defined guidelines appropriate procedures when conducting (OWT) research. In response this, we consulted scientific literature on considerations and examined existing established professional societies boards. Based these documents, present set recommendations that can inform development ethically responsible OWT Key designing executing include violation privacy rights, defining subjects illegality, risk misinterpretation or posing risks participants sharing data. Potential solutions considering participants’ expectations privacy, are authors versus subjects, understanding legal cultural context, minimizing data collection, ensuring anonymization, removing metadata. Best practices also involve being culturally sensitive analyzing reporting findings. Adhering help mitigate potential pitfalls provides valuable insights editors, review boards, enabling them conduct scientifically rigorous advance this growing field.

Abstract The trade of alien species as pets is increasingly recognized a biosecurity risk due to their intentional and accidental release into the wild. However, are often categorized native or non‐native at national level, meaning that presence outside range, yet within country, may be an overlooked threat. So‐called “domestic non‐natives” have established new populations across several countries and, in some cases, become invasive. Here, we investigated extent domestic Australian pet natural distributions determined whether such locations were climatically suitable for potential establishments. Australia provides unique system explore this issue because it deters most permits keeping large diversity pets. We monitored from popular e‐commerce site used birds, reptiles, amphibians (29 k advertisements over 1 year; July 2019 2020). Of 177 vertebrate observed trade, 129 (73%) had least instances occurring distribution. found environments present range 90 these regions proximal suburbs where trade. Abstract Hypancistrus was proposed as a monotypic genus for highly unique species, H. zebra, known only from short stretch of the Middle rio Xingu on Brazilian Shield. Subsequent studies added eight all described river systems draining Guiana Analysis specimens middle and lower detected two new species that can be separated its congeners based color pattern body size adults, are well ornamental fish trade. Due to their non-overlapping distributions, prospects conserving quite different. One is relatively safe due large distribution throughout Lower channel up downstream end Volta Grande do Xingu, while other in need urgent protection because it restricted at depths greater than 15 meters, lies entirely within impact zone Belo Monte Hydroelectric Power Plant Complex.

Background The use of ornamental fish as pets has important implications for the conservation species used in keeping, particularly relation to overexploitation. Understanding keepers’ relationship with hobby can provide information assessing potential impacts activity. Here, we analyzed profile Brazilian keepers and evaluated their preferences choices. Methods Information was obtained by applying questionnaires 906 participating keeping groups a social network. questionnaire contained questions about kept (freshwater marine), techniques used, socio-economic aspects, associated perspectives. Results Most were young men (20–40 years old), higher education monthly income above US$ 530.00. Participants predominantly freshwater (86%), but marine only (5%) or both hobbyists (9%) also recorded. A total 523 kept, most which comprised (76% total) exotic (73%). About third recorded under national trade restrictions. In addition, declared that they had invertebrates. Marine aquariums require greater financial investment, especially at beginning, than are almost entirely based on species. aesthetic factor is main motivation practicing this hobby, being color behavior key factors choosing fish. 10% have already released into wild, highlighting concerns biological invasions. There an urgent need enforce regulations towards restricting access threatened native potentially invasive species, well measures aimed informing raising hobbyists’ awareness related hobby.

Abstract Online research methods are increasingly used in conservation science to monitor and collect data on online wildlife trade. Shark‐like rays (Rhinopristiformes) among the most threatened vertebrates, prized for their high‐value fins while other uses derivatives largely unrecognized literature. The bowmouth guitarfish ( Rhina ancylostomus ) is characterized by ridges of enlarged thorns, sometimes sold as amulets. Listed Convention International Trade Endangered Species Wild Fauna Flora (CITES) Appendix II, thorn‐market has been ignored undocumented. Using systematic, retrospective searches, we recorded 977 bowmouth‐derivatives sale. In our global multi‐lingual scope, 97% products were offered from Thailand, despite prohibited 98% all thorns (USD3‐300) alongside high‐profile CITES‐listed taxa (e.g., tiger claws). Consistent advertisements 2012 revealed a previously unquantified trade an often‐neglected marketplace elasmobranch research. Our findings offer insight into drivers thorn trade, potentially rooted cultural beliefs. accessible can be applied internationally across species, providing quantitative qualitative insights aspects critically endangered fish.
