One
of
my
first
placements
in
psychiatry
training
was
with
the
early
intervention
psychosis
services
Birmingham,

1990's.
It

I
became
aware

diagnostic

stages
develping
severe
mental
illness.
This
challenged

dichotomy
between
non-affective
illnesses,

driven
work
thinking
ever
since-

for
new
treatments.
Understanding
dysfunction
as
a
potential
intrisic
component
developing
psychotic
disorders

shown
transdiagnostic
shared
underlying
biological
processess,

dysfunction,

to
remission
functional
outcomes.
Currently
focuses
on
targeting
system
improve
recovery
clinical
trials,
further
mechanistic
studies

beyond
traditional

Abstract
Biological
risk
signatures
could
aid
the
early
detection
of
schizophrenia,
but
their
precision
likely
depends
on
clinical
definitions
they
are
derived
from.
Using
machine
learning,
we
analyzed
structural
MRI
data
from
1,425
patients
and
907
healthy
individuals
in
a
multi-site
multi-diagnostic
database
to
detect
validate
different
syndromes―Cognitive
Disturbances
(COGDIS),
Ultra-High-Risk
(UHR)
or
COGDIS
+
UHR―compared
schizophrenia.
Patients
with
not
UHR-related
syndromes
were
detectable
using
MRI.

decade

discoveries

these
resulted
from
pursuits

biomarkers
in
tandem

These
approaches
provided
exciting
new
insights
that

helped
improve
precision

an
overview
how
learning
has
been
employed
recent
biomarker
discovery
research
spectrum,
which
includes
schizophrenia,
schizoaffective
disorders,
bipolar
disorder
psychosis,

clinical
high
risk
for
psychosis.

model
studies
explores
a
varying
range
