In the search of alternative resources to make commodity chemicals and transportation fuels for a low carbon future, lignocellulosic biomass with over 180-billion-ton annual production rate has been identified as promising feedstock. This review focuses on state-of-the-art catalytic transformation into value-added fuels. Following brief introduction structure, major pretreatment methods biomass, conversion three main components, i.e., cellulose, hemicellulose lignin, various compounds are comprehensively discussed. Either in separate steps or one-pot, cellulose hydrolyzed sugars upgraded oxygen-containing such 5-HMF, furfural, polyols, organic acids, even nitrogen-containing amino acids. On other hand, lignin is first depolymerized phenols, catechols, guaiacols, aldehydes ketones, then further transformed hydrocarbon fuels, bioplastic precursors bioactive compounds. The introduces transformations whole via gasification, pyrolysis, well emerging strategies. Finally, opportunities, challenges prospective woody valorization highlighted.

Regarding the limited resources for fossil fuels and increasing global energy demands, greenhouse gas emissions, climate change, there is a need to find alternative sources that are sustainable, environmentally friendly, renewable, economically viable. In last several decades, interest in second-generation bioethanol production from non-food lignocellulosic biomass form of organic residues rapidly increased because its abundance, renewability, low cost. Bioethanol fits into strategy circular economy zero waste plans, using ethanol as an fuel gives world chance become independent petrochemical industry, providing security environmental safety. However, conversion challenging multi-stage process variation biochemical composition recalcitrance lignin, aromatic component lignocellulose. Therefore, commercial cellulosic has not yet well-received commercially, being hampered by high research costs, substantial effort needed make it more widespread profitable. This review summarises state art biomass, highlights most steps process, including pretreatment stages required fragment components further enzymatic hydrolysis fermentation, presents recent technological advances overcome challenges discusses future perspectives biorefineries.
