The proposal by the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) to ban over 12,000 per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) has sparked a debate about potential consequences for economy, industry, environment. Although some PFAS are known be harmful, blanket may lead significant problems in attempting replace PFAS-based materials environmental transition, as well medical devices everyday products. Alternative potentially less safe, rush would reduce time needed toxicological analyses. Studies have shown that exhibit diverse range of mechanisms action, biopersistence, bioaccumulation potential, should thus not treated single group. This is particularly true class fluoropolymers. A targeted approach considers specific risks benefits each chemical more effective. Moreover, proposed also unintended environment use associated with such reducing greenhouse-gas emissions improving energy efficiency. Policymakers must carefully weigh up before making final decision on ban.
