Due to the depletion of fossil fuels and their-related environmental issues, sustainable, clean, renewable energy is urgently needed replace fuel as primary resource. Hydrogen considered one cleanest energies. Among approaches hydrogen production, photocatalysis most sustainable solar technique. Considering low cost fabrication, earth abundance, appropriate bandgap, high performance, carbon nitride has attracted extensive attention catalyst for photocatalytic production in last two decades. In this review, nitride-based system, including catalytic mechanism strategies improving performance discussed. According processes, strengthened catalysts particularly described terms boosting excitation electrons holes, suppressing carriers recombination, enhancing utilization efficiency photon-excited electron-hole. Finally, current trends related screening design superior systems are outlined, development direction clarified.
