Autotrophic nitrogen removal couple process based on anaerobic ammonium oxidation (Anammox) has been applied to treat various high-ammonia and low-carbon wastewater for its advantageous ability remove nitrogen. However, high concentrations of NO3−-N in the effluent is a drawback that prevents total from meeting discharge standard. For this reason, coupling sulfur autotrophic denitrification (SADN) with Anammox advanced treatment achieve completely biological independent organic matter become major focus research recent years. To reduce SO42−-S SADN process, short-cut (SSADN) was pioneered controlling reduction NO2−-N phase. This method also serves as an efficient simultaneously removes containing NH4+-N NO3−-N. article reviews control parameters SSADN forms Anammox, analyze directional transformation complex competition substrates, finally evaluate application bottlenecks limit industrialization, which are necessary address furthering development process.

Due to carbon source dependence, conventional biological nitrogen removal (BNR) processes based on heterotrophic denitrification are suffering from great bottlenecks. The autotrophic BNR process represented by sulfur-driven (SDAD) and anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) provides a viable alternative for addressing low wastewater. Whether municipal wastewater or industrial with high nitrogen, the SDAD anammox can be suitably positioned accordingly. Herein, recent advances challenges guided systematically reviewed. Specifically, present applications crucial operation factors were discussed in detail. Besides, microscopic interpretation of was deepened viewpoint functional microbial species their physiological characteristics. Furthermore, current limitations some future research priorities over identified multiple perspectives. obtained knowledge would provide insights into application optimization process, which will contribute establishment new generation efficient energy-saving systems.

The investigation of partial denitrification/anammox (PD/anammox) processes was conducted under autotrophic (N–S cycle) and mixotrophic (N–S–C conditions over 180 days. Key findings revealed the remarkable capability SO42--dependent systems to produce NO2− effectively, supporting anaerobic NH4+ oxidation. Additionally, SO42− served as an additional electron acceptor in sulfate reduction ammonium oxidation (SRAO). Increasing influent concentrations notably improved ammonia utilization rates (AUR) total nitrogen (TN) efficiencies, peaking at 57% for SBR1 nearly 100% SBR2. Stoichiometric analysis showed a 7.5-fold increase AUR (SRAO anammox) following supplementation. However, SBR2 indicated shift towards SRAO denitrification, with anammox disappearing entirely by end study. Comparative assessments between emphasized impact organic compounds (CH3COONa) on transformations within N–S–C cycle. performance primarily involved anammox, other pathways, minimal S-dependent denitrification (SDAD) involvement. In contrast, encompassed SRAO, pathways production. process two dominant genera, such Candidatus Brocadia PHOS-HE36.
