Abstract Microplastics research in South Africa has focused on marine and coastal areas, with limited studies reporting microplastics freshwaters. To address this gap, we conducted study to investigate the presence, abundance, physical characteristics, chemical composition of surface water Vaal River, one most important freshwater systems Africa.
