Heavy metal wastewater often contains multiple ions, and competition among them reduces the adsorption efficiency of microalgae. Enhancing this is crucial for improving heavy removal. This study optimized lysine addition to facilitating formation a ternary complex between microalgae, lysine, metals, thereby enhancing in both single- mixed-metal systems. In single-metal system at 64 mg/L, improved removal rates copper, zinc, cadmium by 13.96%, 41.21%, 33.26%, respectively. binary systems (Cu-Zn, Cu-Cd, Cu-Pb) 32 increased copper 11.81%, 15.71%, 25.25%, while cadmium, lead 15.41%, 12.51%, 3.93%, Competitive analysis revealed that most strongly inhibited adsorption, significantly suppressed zinc adsorption. Mechanistic investigations using 3D-EEM, FTIR, XPS demonstrated humic substances extracellular polymeric (EPSs) microalgae play key role binding. interaction increases number carboxyl functional groups on cell surface, microalgae’s capacity adsorb metals.
