Dopamine (DA) level in the nucleus accumbens (NAc) is critical for reward and aversion encoding. DA released from ventral mesencephalon (VM) DAergic neurons increases excitability of VM-projecting D1-dopamine receptor-expressing medium spiny (D1-MSNs) NAc to enhance release augment rewards. However, how such a positive feedback loop regulated maintain homeostasis reward-aversion balance remains elusive. Here we report that pallidum (VP) projection D1-MSNs (D1NAc-VP) inhibited by rewarding stimuli activated aversive stimuli. In contrast VM D1-MSN (D1NAc-VM), activation D1NAc-VP induces aversion, but not reward. MSNs are distinct D1NAc-VM MSNs, which exhibit conventional functions D1-MSNs. Activation stimulates GABAergic transmission, inhibits neurons, reduces into NAc. Thus, cooperatively control dopamine states.

Attention is critical to high-level cognition and attention deficits are a hallmark of neurologic neuropsychiatric disorders. Although years research indicates that distinct neuromodulators influence attentional control, mechanistic account traverses levels analysis (cells, circuits, behavior) missing. Significance The cholinergic system plays a critical role in neural modulation of the mammalian brain. Here, we generated comprehensive atlas mouse brain via whole-brain imaging and reconstruction system. In dataset, neurons were divided into three categories including cortical VIP neurons, long-range projection brainstem motor neurons. After reconstructing subregion basal forebrain, found that their projections to forebrain midbrain showed neuronal subgroups with distinct specificity. Our work presents three-dimensional information about brain, facilitating further studies

Abstract The Brain from Inside Out takes a critical look at contemporary brain research and reminds us that theoretical framework does matter.
