SONIA: an immersive customizable virtual reality system for the education and exploration of brain networks

While
mastery
of
neuroanatomy
is
important
for
the
investigation
brain,
there
an
increasing
interest
in
exploring
neural
pathways
to
better
understand
roles
circuitry
brain
functions.
To
tackle
limitations
traditional
2D-display-based
neuronavigation
software
intuitively
visualizing
complex
3D
anatomies,
several
virtual
reality
(VR)
and
augmented
(AR)
solutions
have
been
proposed
facilitate
neuroanatomical
education.
However,
with
knowledge
on
connectivity
functioning
sub-systems,
still
a
lack
similar
education
exploration
these
topics,
which
demand
more
elaborate
visualization
interaction
strategies.
address
this
gap,
we
designed
immerSive
custOmizable
Neuro
learnIng
plAtform
(SONIA),
novel,
user-friendly
VR
system
multi-scale
paradigm
that
allowed
flexible
customization
learning
materials.
With
both
quantitative
qualitative
evaluations
through
user
studies,
was
shown
high
usability,
attractive
visual
design,
good
educational
value.
As
first
immersive
integrated
customizable
design
detailed
narratives
sub-systems
connectivity,
SONIA
showcased
new
potential
directions
provided
valuable
insights
regarding
medical
VR.

This
paper
presents
the
impact
of
using
virtual
reality
(VR)
in
education
and
focuses

factors

affect
behavioral
intention
