Importance Although questionnaire-based cross-sectional research suggests that screen time before bed correlates with poor sleep, self-reported data seem unlikely to capture the complexity of modern use, requiring objective night-by-night measures advance this field. Objective To examine whether evening is associated sleep duration and quality night in youths. Design, Setting, Participants This repeated-measures cohort study was performed from March December 2021 participant homes Dunedin, New Zealand. included healthy youths aged 11 14.9 years. Data were analyzed October November 2023. Exposure Objectively measured time, captured using wearable or stationary video cameras 2 hours bedtime until first youth attempted (shut-eye time) over 4 nonconsecutive nights. Video coded a reliable protocol (κ = 0.92) quantify device (8 options [eg, smartphone]) activity (10 social media]) type. Main Outcomes Measures Sleep objectively via wrist-worn accelerometers. The association use on basis mixed-effects regression models including as random effect adjusted for weekends. Results Of 79 participants (47 [59.5%] male; mean [SD] age, 12.9 [1.1] years), all but 1 had bed. Screen no most health (eg, difference total 0 minutes [95% CI, –3 20 minutes] every 10 more time). All types delayed onset particularly interactive (mean difference, minutes; 95% 16 additional Every shorter –6 –1 minute). −9 (95% −16 −2 minutes) −4 −7 passive use. In particular, gaming –17 –28 –7 gaming) multitasking −35 –67 –4 nights vs without multitasking) less time. Conclusions Relevance study, an method showed once impairment especially when involved multitasking. These findings suggest current hygiene recommendations restrict neither achievable nor appropriate.

Social media have drastically changed the context of adolescent development. To date, majority research investigating effects these changes has measured time spent on social media, yielding inconclusive results—likely because this approach conceptualizes as a monolith. experiences are complex and diverse, adolescents themselves. Emerging identified several specific components that varied associations with mental health, well individual difference factors may alter across adolescents. In annual review, we synthesize evidence regarding heterogeneity in related to (a) (b) adolescents' differences use effects. We first focus components—content, features, functions—that be especially relevant for These include functions designed foster relationships connections (e.g., feeds, ‘friends’), hateful content, notifications, risky algorithmically curated among others. Next, provide an overview whom matter most. review explain some effects, including gender/sex, age, marginalized status, neurobiological sensitivities, other preexisting vulnerabilities health concerns. The nascent work areas suggests many constructs considerations could drive future examining nuanced precise questions go beyond ‘screen time’. discuss avenues researchers leverage methodological advancements address how shape developmental outcomes.

Background There is evidence that overexposure to digital media devices (DMD) can not only lead addictive patterns of internet use, but also cause insomnia symptoms. The aim this cross-sectional study among adolescents provide an estimate the prevalence sleep impairments and explore mediating role after-midnight use DMD between internet-related behavior (IRAB) insomnia. Methods 2,712 school students from Styrian schools participated in a population-representative online survey supervised setting spring 2022. School were screened using established validated scales. Data analysis was carried out multiple imputation, linear multilevel regression mediation analysis. Results Prevalence estimation indicates high proportions clinically relevant moderate [12.6% (11.3%; 14.1%)] severe [3.6% (2.9%; 4.4%)] insomnia, with additional 30.6% (29.0%; 32.2%) at subthreshold level. are typically used after midnight average 1.66 (1.58; 1.75) evenings subsequent day per week. Linear shows significant associations for disparities as outcome variable e.g., generalized anxiety [ b = 0.329 (0.287; 0.371)], [b 0.470 (0.369; 0.572)] IRAB 0.131 (0.097; 0.165)]. Mediation mediated proportion 18.2% (13.0%; 25.0%) association by [Indirect effect: 0.032 (0.023; 0.040), direct 0.127 (0.083; 0.170)]. Conclusions Although nature limits causal inference, results indicate need policies, which already preparation Styria part respective action plan.

Objective This study aims to explore how problematic internet use may affect the sleep quality of Chinese adolescents using extended Stressor-Strain-Outcome (SSO) model. The model posits that stressors indirectly influence behavioral outcomes through mediation emotional and physiological strain responses. Method A sample 4,365 in China participated this study, which utilized questionnaires other methods develop a novel SSO In model, was considered as stressor, anxiety an indicator tension, ultimate outcome. Family health introduced moderating variable. Results found can significantly positively predict adolescents’ ( β = 0.132, p < 0.001) 0.362, 0.001). Furthermore, identified significant mediating factor between [Effect 0.066, 0.05, 95% CI (0.014, −0.0018)]. observed have effect on relationship −0.075, Conclusion research indicates not only directly increases individual stressor but also impacts by exacerbating anxiety. However, positive family status effectively moderate adverse impact

Associations between adolescent social media use and well-being are inconclusive, studies using rigorous methodologies objective measures needed. Additionally, attention on what individual differences may moderate linkages is necessary. We tested 1) how daily (assessed via ecological momentary self-reports) relates to subjective well-being, 2) the prevalence concordance scholar-defined addiction-like (ASMU) participant perceptions of addiction, 3) these constructs relate 4) if links well-being. In a sample 103 adolescents (M age=16.48, 47% female), ASMU perceived addiction were highly correlated but some adolescents' classification differed when cross-referencing. Both similarly associated with demographics depressive symptoms. Self-reported, not objectively-recorded, was related greater addiction. Links inconsistent, no moderation by or Most endorsed degree ASMU, future research should examine media-triggered disruptions functioning
