Humans are exposed to micro-and-nano plastics (MNPs) through various routes, but the adverse health effects of MNPs on different organ systems not yet fully understood. This review aims provide an overview potential impacts and identify knowledge gaps in current research. The summarized results suggest that exposure can lead oxidative stress, inflammation, immune dysfunction, altered biochemical energy metabolism, impaired cell proliferation, disrupted microbial metabolic pathways, abnormal development, carcinogenicity. There is limited human data MNPs, despite evidence from animal cellular studies. Most published research has focused specific types assess their toxicity, while other plastic particles commonly found environment remain unstudied. Future studies should investigate by considering realistic concentrations, dose-dependent effects, individual susceptibility, confounding factors.

The presence of microplastics (MPs) in human fluids and organs is a great concern, since, as highlighted by recent studies on animal models, they could cause alterations several physiological functions, including reproduction. In this study, semen samples collected from men living polluted area the Campania Region (Southern Italy), were analyzed to assess MPs. N. 16 pigmented microplastic fragments (ranging 2 6 μm size) with spheric or irregular shapes found six out ten samples. All detected MPs characterized terms morphology (size, colour, shape) chemical composition Raman Microspectroscopy. Chemical showed polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE), terephthalate (PET), polystyrene (PS), polyvinylchloride (PVC), polycarbonate (PC), polyoxymethylene (POM) acrylic, suggesting ingestion and/or inhalation route exposure environmental work, we propose for first time mechanism which pass into most likely through epididymis seminal vesicles, are susceptible inflammation.

Microplastics (MPs) are becoming ubiquitous, and their environmental fate is an issue of concern. Our review aims to synthesize current knowledge status provide future perspectives regarding the vector effect MPs for chemical contaminants biological agents. The evidence in literature indicates that a persistent organic pollutants (POPs), metals pharmaceuticals. Concentrations contaminant orders six-fold higher on surfaces than surrounding waters have been reported. Chemical such as perfluoroalkyl substances (PAFSs), hexachlorocyclohexane (HCHs) polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), exhibiting polarities range 3.3–9 commonest chemicals reported MP surfaces. Regarding including chromium (Cr), lead (Pb), cobalt (Co), presence C–O N–H promote relatively high adsorption these onto pharmaceuticals, not much has done, but few studies indicate commonly used drugs ibuprofen, diclofenac, naproxen associated with MPs. There sufficient supporting claim can act vectors viruses, bacterial antibiotic-resistant bacteria genes, accelerate horizontal vertical gene transfer. An area deserves urgent attention whether invertebrates vertebrates, mainly non-native, invasive freshwater species. Despite ecological significance biology, little research done this regard. Overall, our summarises state knowledge, identifies critical gaps provides research.

Abstract The microplastics (MPs), due to their high dispersion and bioaccumulation rates, have been identified in various animal groups, such as anuran amphibians during both larval adult stages. However, current studies on focus assessing only one exposure route, the digestive system, while other routes remain underestimated. Therefore, this present study aimed evaluate degree of contamination digestive, respiratory, integumentary systems, situ, two endemic Amazonian species ( Physalaemus ephippifer Boana multifasciata ). From this, we characterized microplastic particles for each assessed effects morphometric measures total MP level gastrointestinal tract (GIT). Additionally, determined different indices how they vary according systems. Based our data, showed highest levels species. variations indicated that P. had a higher contamination. Thus, provides first evidence through respiratory anurans it is identify terrestrial biomonitors Amazon.

Microplastics (MPs) are contaminants widely distributed in the environment and biota. Previously, most studies focused on identifying characterizing microplastics marine environment, while their impact freshwater ecosystems remains to be determined. This review summarizes recent findings regarding MPs physiological, immunological, genetic effects amphibians based upon biological relevance of this species as indicators pollution. Data demonstrated that contamination may potentially alter various physiological processes aquatic animals, mainly embryonic stages. It is worthwhile noting adverse might enhanced synergy with other pollutants. However, counteract effect pollutants through microbiota present both intestine skin. In addition, amphibian microbial composition also altered by themselves a manner leads unpredicted health consequences amphibians.

Microplastics (MPs)' ingestion has been demonstrated in several aquatic organisms. This process may facilitate the hydrophobic waterborne pollutants or chemical additives transfer to biota. In present study suitability of a battery biomarkers on oxidative stress, physiology, tissue function and metabolic profile was investigated for early detection adverse effects 21-day exposure polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs, sized 5-12 μm) liver gills zebrafish Danio rerio perch, Perca fluviatilis, both which are freshwater fish species. An optical volume map representation gill by Raman spectroscopy depicted 5 μm diameter PS-MP dispersed tissue. Concentrations PS-MPs close EC50 each affected physiology all tissues studied. Increased levels damage exposed relation controls were observed, as well activation apoptosis autophagy processes. Malondialdehyde (MDA), protein carbonyls DNA responses differed with regard sensitivity fish. toxicity cascade seemed be more liable respond than majority parameters measured. most susceptible biomarker exhibiting greater response The interaction between MPs cellular components provoked alterations studied, affecting mainly amino acids, nitrogen energy metabolism. Toxicity species specific, specific responding differently liver. that at conditions P. fluviatilis compared D. rerio. current findings add holistic approach identification small PS-MPs' biological fish, thus aiming provide evidence regarding environmental impact wild populations food safety adequacy.
