Being located in the middle of Southern Europe, and thus likely representing a particularly dynamic member Mediterranean Italy has experienced sudden increase early desertification risk because multiple factors change. Long-term research initiatives have provided relatively well-known examples continuous assessment carried out via exercises from different academic practitioner stakeholders, frequently using Environmentally Sensitive Area Index (ESAI). This composite index based on large number elementary variables individual indicators—spanning climate to soil quality vegetation cover land-use intensity—facilitated comprehensive, long-term monitoring at disaggregated spatial scales, being some relevance for policy implementation. The present study summarizes main evidence environmental by analyzing long time series ESAI scores administrative boundaries better representation biophysical socioeconomic trends interest monitoring. descriptive analysis offers refined economic spaces country during past (1960–2010 decadal basis), (2020), future (2030, exploring four scenarios, S1–S4) times. Taken as proxy advanced economies, increased over result worse regimes (namely, drier warmer conditions), landscape change, rising human pressure that exacerbated related processes, such erosion, salinization, compaction, sealing, water scarcity, wildfires, overgrazing.

Adaptive reuse is a rapidly expanding frontier study area across the world. can have significant influence in relation to contemporary trends (peri-)urban sustainability, especially considering past decades of human-caused depletion natural resources and environmental pollution. developments, which manage incorporate (scientifically) predefined set conceptual theories, policy principles, practical tools, as all available data suggest, achieve good balance between invested capital, ecological conservation, preservation cultural heritage, sustainable urban regenerative renewal. This focused on recent FIX Brewery adaptive project Athens, Greece, means establish key public perception determinants practice impacts development. Evidence for relationships among five factors was provided through multiple linear regression analysis. The new empirical findings are likely encourage concerned parties stakeholders, particularly regulatory entities, pursue essential actions at core spatial masterplans, paving way toward circular cities.

European cities have experienced rapid (and often conflicting) transformations that include, inter alia, the environment, economy, society, climate change, and access to affordable housing, with implications for their future development. In order address such issues, assessing current situation of metropolises is crucial understanding new urban development models. light these dynamics, our study focused on expansion in Pafos, Cyprus, between 1993 2021. Such dynamics were examined through photointerpretation (using kernel density estimation) via ArcGISPro spatial analyst tool. The empirical results this analysis are considered particularly insightful, especially those regarding sprawl its land management area, could help toward shaping specific policies guide towards sustainable environmentally friendly reveals a gradual increase settlements over time (55%), although rate growth has decreased recent years, as consequence economic crisis. Density maps revealed varying levels concentration density, highlighting presence high-density settlement cores downtown low-density, dispersed surrounding districts. According findings study, Pafos features fragmented patterns scattered building landscapes large empty spaces. To challenges actions proposed promote mitigate negative impacts. By examining building/settlement planning, stakeholders can gain valuable insights implement viable solutions future. In Europe, urban shrinkage has emerged as a prominent and concerning phenomenon. It is affecting an increasingly large number of cities, particularly small medium-sized ones. Nonetheless, the dynamics causes vary at national level. recent process in Spain, although 21st century, especially since great recession, shrinking cities expanded. This evolution yet to be sufficiently addressed literature, and, politics media, it been overshadowed by rural depopulation. The aim this study shed light on what happening based case Spain. To do so, we combine multiple demographic socioeconomic variables with correlational analysis reveals link between depopulation ageing due fall potential working population, while births population aged below 16 years decreases that over 65 increases. Additionally, correlated loss no significant correlations can established economic considered. Depopulation is caused by low fertility rates and out-migration, it applies to countries, regions smaller areas. Rural depopulation defined as a sharp population decline that falls well below an adequate size indicates area has lost its demographic reproductive capacity. This paper discusses the socioeconomic territorial aspects of rural depopulation, attempting do justice spatial dimensions phenomenon.
