The study brings a comprehensive picture of how the infection threat and counter-pandemic measures affected inhabitants’ perceptions their urban environments during COVID-19 pandemic. Our results reveal that pandemic has amplified value attributed to 1) peri-urban public private green spaces, 2) local availability services civic amenities, 3) neighbourhood tranquillity lower population density, 4) residential unit spaciousness, 5) social relations. Certain attributes, such as received greater emphasis from educated women, while elderly predominantly highlighted significance

Guangdong, Fujian, and Zhejiang (GFZ), located on China’s southeast coast, have long been economically active rapidly growing provinces in China. However, the rising energy consumption these poses a major challenge to their carbon emissions reduction. Due spatial variation natural environment socio-economic activities, (ECEs) reduction may vary among counties. The matter of scientifically formulating localized paths has therefore become critical issue. This study proposed novel path analysis framework based exploring spatiotemporal heterogeneity using statistic model (i.e., weighted regression). path’s learning procedure was linking changes amount ECEs shifts dominant factors, which were detected through local significance tests coefficients STWR. To verify its effectiveness, we conducted county-level empirical considering four drivers population (P), impervious surfaces (I), proportion secondary industry (manufacturing, M), tertiary (services, S)) GFZ from 2014 2021. show two different trends that be affected by COVID-19 pandemic economic recession; hence, divided them into periods: an period (2014–2018) stable (2018–2021). Many interpretable occurrences derived our results, including following: (1) P S showed higher sensitivity compared with I M. Most counties (more than 50%) dominated P, but dominator shift I, M, during period. S-dominated reverted being P-dominated ones (2) For period, most significant paths, M+ → S− P+ (+/− denotes positive or negative impacts driver), reduced about 7.747 × 105 tons 3.145 tons, respectively. Meanwhile, worst path, S+ P+, increased nearly 1.186 106 tons. (3) best (S+ I+) significantly 1.122 while M− I+ 1.978 4.107 ×105 These findings effectiveness further highlight need for tailored, region-specific policies achieve goals.

Currently, Chinese cities are experiencing both overall growth and localized shrinkage. Therefore, it becomes crucial to quantify urban shrinkage explore the transformation sustainable development of shrinking from perspective resilience. This study focuses on three provinces Northeast China, which representative areas shrinkage, as its research subjects. Employing analytic hierarchy process, a comprehensive evaluation system for is constructed based dimensions: population, economy, space. Furthermore, resilience scientifically measured four aspects: society, ecology, infrastructure. The analyzes spatiotemporal evolution characteristics in northeastern 2012 2018. It also examines impact through regression analysis mediation models. results indicate following: (1) Half experienced although extent decreased with implementation China revitalization strategy. Population-related was most extensive continued expand, while economy-related severe, space-related least severe. (2) lower than average level. Population-shrinking economy-shrinking exhibited low levels economic resilience, gap between them widen. Space-shrinking generally had infrastructure (3) index significant positive index, mediated intermediary variables, such innovation capability cultural development. Notably, direct indirect effects were greatest. largest more variables passed significance test.

Urban shrinkage has emerged as a global phenomenon in recent decades, attracting increasing attention from scholars since the early 2000s, with broader geographical scope and research topics. However, there is lack of systematic reviews encompassing evolution discourse, shifting focus, national context comparisons. This analyzed 98 articles directly related to urban studies both qualitative quantitative perspectives provide comprehensive overview current research. The results show that on shrinking cities it received worldwide attention, significant conducted United States, Germany, Japan, China. Most have been at city level. most prevalent topics are causes response policies. perception shows change unacceptance acceptance, coping strategies adjusted accordingly. There two main planning paradigms: growth-oriented shrinkage-adapted planning. While many advocated for approaches like "smart shrinkage" "right-sizing," some questioned their feasibility effectiveness. Among specific strategies, economic restructuring addressing vacancy issues focus attention. Additionally, discourse vary country country, also differences policies involved actors. Furthermore, this study identified blind spots future exploration.

Little is known about the geography of firm survival during COVID-19. We investigated effect heterogeneity pandemic itself and business support funding by Finnish government with respect to rural urban closures. To do so, we utilised regional data on survival, detailed a rural–urban typology for Finland. Results from panel regressions showed that had an overall negative impact businesses in terms increased closure rate 20–30% period 2020q2–2022q4, which was generally higher than areas. While bulk went businesses, COVID-19 mitigated effects closures equally across different categories. Counterfactual simulations show average would have been 10–12% if no schemes implemented.

In shrinking cities, adaptive responses such as 'smart shrinkage' are regarded a promising approach to address depopulation and the quality of life for remaining residents. While its validity gains recognition, gap between theory practice still exists. Empirical studies validating theoretical concept few, particularly in context Asia where urban shrinkage is rapidly occurring. This study identified key opportunities obstacles realizing practice, using case North Gyeongsang Province, South Korea. The findings showed that were complementary pro-growth responses, strengthening regional relationships shared infrastructure.
