Abstract: In the current coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, important public health measures such as utilization of face masks has been widely enforced, including community-wide mandatory mask use. During this period, there have observations an increasing number patients presenting with dry eye symptoms among regular users no history ocular surface pathology. Individuals reported being aware air blowing upward from into their eyes that is likely to increase evaporation tear film leading irritation. Although use essential in combatting COVID-19 it recognize potential effects may on health. We report a case mask–associated complication. After initial cornea abrasion use, patient developed recurrent corneal erosion syndrome was complicated by microbial keratitis after enforcement areas.

Abstract This population-based observational, cross-sectional, and descriptive survey was to investigate the relationship of increased face mask usage in coronavirus disease (COVID-19) era with mask-associated dry eye (MADE). Participants aged 6–79 years old formal school education were selected. All participants finished 19-item questionnaire online, distributed through different social media platforms. From 6925 who submitted eligible questionnaires, MADE reported 547 participants, which included 419 developed new symptoms after wearing masks 128 whose pre-existing worsened wearing. Longer time wearing, nonstandard masks, reduced outdoor time, decreased daily reading shortened visual display terminals environment positively associated MADE. There significant associations between perceived age, female sex, education, use glasses contact lenses, eye. more common adults > 20 than those ≤ or juveniles. incidence increased. Standard suggested as a protective factor for Awareness about possible risk should also be created clinical signs verified. Clinical trial registration number: NCT04744805.

The aim of this article is to review the literature on impact coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) dry eye (DED). A search and COVID-19 was performed. Most current studies focus DED in patients diagnosed with or symptoms random populations students medical staff. Real-world practices revealed a variety responses, possibly related local environmental factors lifestyle. Patients recovered from warrant ocular surface surveillance for DED. Pandemic mitigation strategies including remote work/school/leisure mask wearing affect globally. Heightened reiteration management behavioral modifications, visual display terminals, attention its effects increasingly important as pandemic continues.

Dry eye is considered an inflammatory disease. Gut microbiota are important in the regulation of low-grade chronic inflammation, including eye. Probiotics and prebiotics increasingly used to regulate chronic-disease-associated gut dysbiosis. Therefore, this double-masked, randomized controlled clinical trial aimed explore potential oral probiotics management dry In total, 41 participants with received probiotic prebiotic supplements (treatment group, n = 23) or respective placebos (control 18) for 4 months. symptoms signs were evaluated using Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI), Eye Questionnaire 5, osmolarity, non-invasive keratograph break-up time (NIKBUT), ocular surface staining, tear meniscus height (TMH), lipid layer thickness, conjunctival redness. After months, average OSDI score treatment group was significantly better compared that controls (16.8 ± 5.9 vs. 23.4 7.4; p < 0.001). The NIKBUT TMH did not change (p 0.31 0.84) but reduced on by −5.5 1.0 secs 0.03) 0.2 0.1 mm 0.02). These data suggest might be effective
