Abstract
Bacteria
in
the
genus
Wolbachia
have
evolved
numerous
strategies
to
manipulate
arthropod
sex,
including
conversion
of
would-be
male
offspring
asexually
reproducing
females.
This
so-called
“parthenogenesis
induction”
phenotype
can
be
found
a
number
strains
that
infect
arthropods
with
haplodiploid
sex
determination
systems,
parasitoid
wasps.
Despite
discovery
microbe-mediated
parthenogenesis
more
than
30
yr
ago,
underlying
genetic
mechanisms
remained
elusive.
We
used
suite
genomic,
computational,
and
molecular
tools
identify
characterize
two
proteins
are
uniquely
parthenogenesis-inducing
strong
signatures
host-associated
bacterial
effector
proteins.

ABSTRACT
A
large
proportion
of
arthropod
species
are
infected
with
endosymbionts,
some
which
selfishly
alter
host
reproduction.
The
currently
known
forms
parasitic
reproductive
manipulations
male‐killing,
feminization,
cytoplasmic
incompatibility,
parthenogenesis
induction
and
distortion
sex
allocation.
While
all
these
phenomena
represent
adaptations
that
enhance
parasite
spread,
they
differ
in
the
mechanisms
involved
consequent
infection

here

summarizing
existing
theoretical
literature

Wolbachia
(phylum
