In recent years, Federated Learning (FL) has gained relevance in training collaborative models without sharing sensitive data. Since its birth, Centralized FL (CFL) been the most common approach literature, where a central entity creates global model. However, centralized leads to increased latency due bottlenecks, heightened vulnerability system failures, and trustworthiness concerns affecting responsible for model creation. Decentralized (DFL) emerged address these by promoting decentralized aggregation minimizing reliance on architectures. despite work done DFL, literature not (i) studied main aspects differentiating DFL CFL; (ii) analyzed frameworks create evaluate new solutions; (iii) reviewed application scenarios using DFL. Thus, this article identifies analyzes fundamentals of terms federation architectures, topologies, communication mechanisms, security approaches, key performance indicators. Additionally, paper at hand explores existing mechanisms optimize critical fundamentals. Then, relevant features current are compared. After that, it used scenarios, identifying solutions based previously defined. Finally, evolution is provide list trends, lessons learned, open challenges.
