Socio-technical niches are often presented as key drivers for transitioning established production and consumption systems to more sustainable configurations. In previous research, the important roles of collectively shared expectations in shaping development nurturing such has been emphasised. Gender is a vital factor of societal organisation and transformation, figures prominently in global sustainability agendas. Its social construction interaction with technological change have been studied extensively. Within the field transition (ST) research, however, complex roles gender plays socio-technical are still rarely addressed or conceptualised. Based on systematic review covering scientific publications from 2010 to 2020 we illustrate this overall gap explore how operationalised. We draw Harding's notion as structural, symbolic behavioural expression consider implications for understanding regimes, niches, regime/niche interactions. Our results recognise variety conceptual approaches accounting diverse relations dynamics their orientation. In conclusion usefulness suggested analytical lens strengthening gender-sensitive inter- transdisciplinary ST research systematically, suggest promising avenues future studies.

Small-scale gold mining sustains millions of people's lives and yet it stimulates environmental harms social conflicts. Global crises drive calls for fundamental change to how people live on the planet. For small-scale mining, this raises questions about whether current dynamics can provide a basis sustainability transformations. Proposing notion lifeways focus lived experience resources as relational phenomena, we ask what looks like from different miners' perspectives probe practice transformation. Our methodology is science-led transdisciplinary. From multi-sited trans-regional research between South America Africa, draw cases Suriname, Guinea Conakry, Uganda. study finds that give expression strands sustainability: sustaining everyday life in mining; discourses framing practices; government repression mining. Hence, our empirical data demonstrates, miner gain content not isolation, but part embedded within contexts shaped by societal dynamics. Ultimately, transformative potency located personal precarious rather than glittering promises sustainable future.

In recent years, attention within the sustainability transitions literature has focused on politics of deliberately accelerating transitions. One core strand this research been to understand role coalition-building in supporting or undermining decarbonisation efforts. This scholarly work clear synergies with on-the-ground environmental justice movement, yet date there limited exchange between new and movements. perspective paper addresses gap through examining three areas important meaningful overlap movement literature. These centre around praxis building coalitions, understandings power appreciation justice. context climate breakdown, need accelerate more just sustainable futures, aims lay groundwork for movement.
