Gender
is
a
vital
factor
of
societal
organisation
and
transformation,
figures
prominently
in
global
sustainability
agendas.
Its
social
construction
interaction
with
technological
change
have
been
studied
extensively.
Within
the
field
transition
(ST)
research,
however,
complex
roles
gender
plays
socio-technical
are
still
rarely
addressed
or
conceptualised.
Based
on
systematic
review
covering
scientific
publications
from
2010
to
2020
we
illustrate
this
overall
gap
explore
how
operationalised.
We
draw
Harding's
notion
as
structural,
symbolic
behavioural
expression
consider
implications
for
understanding
regimes,
niches,
regime/niche
interactions.
Our
results
recognise
variety
conceptual
approaches
accounting
diverse
relations
dynamics
their
orientation.
In
conclusion
usefulness
suggested
analytical
lens
strengthening
gender-sensitive
inter-
transdisciplinary
ST
research
systematically,
suggest
promising
avenues
future
studies.

small-scale
mining,
this
raises
questions
about
whether
current
dynamics
can
provide
a
basis
sustainability
transformations.
Proposing
notion
lifeways
focus
lived
experience
resources
as
relational
phenomena,
we
ask
what
looks
like
from
different
miners'
perspectives
probe
practice
transformation.
Our
methodology
is
science-led
transdisciplinary.
From
multi-sited
trans-regional
research
between
South
America
Africa,
draw
cases
Suriname,
Guinea
Conakry,
Uganda.
study
finds
that
give
expression
strands
sustainability:
sustaining
everyday
life
in
mining;
discourses
framing
practices;
government
repression
mining.
Hence,
our
empirical
data
demonstrates,
miner
gain
content
not
isolation,
but
part
embedded
within
contexts
shaped
by
societal
dynamics.
Ultimately,
transformative
potency
located
personal
precarious
rather
than
glittering
promises
sustainable
future.
