Abstract Sleep is associated with many costs, but also important to survival, a lack of sleep impairing cognitive function and increasing mortality. Sleeping in groups could alleviate sleep‐associated or introduce new costs if social sleeping disrupts sleep. Working the Jamaican fruit bat ( Artibeus jamaicensis) , we aimed to: (1) describe architecture, (2) assess how affects sleep, (3) quantify total time identify rapid eye movement (REM) using behavioral indicators that complement physiological evidence Twenty‐five adult bats were captured Panama recorded an artificial roost enclosure. Three fitted electromyograph accelerometer video alone controlled laboratory settings. The remaining 22 assigned differing configurations (alone, dyad, triad, tetrad) outdoor flight cage. We found was highly variable among individuals (ranging from 2 h 53 min 9 39 over 12‐h period). Although did not detect statistically significant effects our sample size limited, preliminary trends suggest male may longer than females, alone. high correspondence between quantified visually actigraphy (with 2‐min immobility threshold) identified correlates behaviorally‐defined REM. These results serve as starting point for future work on ecology evolution other wild mammals.

Abstract The hippocampal formation plays established roles in learning, memory, and related cognitive functions. Recent findings also suggest that the hippocampus integrates sensory feedback from self‐generated movements to modulate ongoing motor responses a changing environment. Such support view of Bland Oddie (Behavioural Brain Research, 2001, 127, 119–136) is site sensorimotor integration. In further this view, we review neurophysiological evidence developing rats function built on foundation especially evident early development. Moreover, at those ages when first establishing functional connectivity with distant structures, preferentially expressed during periods active (or REM) sleep. These reinforce notion sleep, as predominant state infancy, provides critical context for development, including development its associated network.

In utero brain development underpins health across the lifespan but is vulnerable to physiological and pharmacological perturbation. Here, we show that antiepileptic medication during pregnancy impacts on cortical activity neonatal sleep, a potent indicator of newborn health. These effects are evident in frequency-specific functional networks carry prognostic information for later neurodevelopment. Notably, such differ between different drugs suggest neurodevelopmental adversity from exposure not maternal epilepsy per se. This work provides translatable bedside metrics sensitive postnatal neurodevelopment direct value.
