Abstract How the migration behavior of long-lived birds develops throughout their life is still a research question in ornithology that largely unanswered. Here, we analyzed GPS data 70 juvenile Black Storks during first 3 years to determine influence age and experience on patterns. We focused choice flyway, as well movements wintering area, changes departure times with increasing age. Migratory routes German were divided into western (82% all tracked individuals) eastern flyways (16%). The central migratory flyway through Italy or Greece was taken only by two individuals never repeatedly. In addition, found area decreased almost 60% life. spring dates from areas also became earlier However, did not find departures breeding autumn. Thus, our study shows experiences have considerable essential decisions Storks. Further, it demonstrates older storks rely strongly previous perform migrations efficiently.

Whether avian migrants can adapt to their changing world depends on the relative importance of genetic and environmental variation for timing direction migration. In classic series field experiments migration, A. C. Perdeck discovered that translocated juveniles failed reach goal areas, whereas adults performed ‘true-goal navigation’. His translocations > 14 000 common starlings ( Sturnus vulgaris ) suggested mechanisms guide into a population-specific direction, i.e. ‘vector However, alternative explanations involving social learning after release in could not be excluded. By adding historical data from translocation sites, was unavailable Perdeck's days, by integrated analyses including original data, we explain juvenile migrations possible information upon release. Despite highly behaviour, our findings are consistent with idea follow inherited independently winter quarters. Similar more solitarily migrating songbirds, would require change adjust migration route response global change.
