The transition to technologically-assisted communication has permeated all facets of human social life; yet, its impact on the brain is still unknown and effects may be particularly intense during periods developmental transitions. Applying a two-brain perspective, current preregistered study utilized hyperscanning EEG measure brain-to-brain synchrony in 62 mother-child pairs at adolescence (child age; M = 12.26, range 10-14) live face-to-face interaction versus remote communication. elicited 9 significant cross-brain links between densely inter-connected frontal temporal areas beta [14-30 Hz]. Mother's right region connected with child's left frontal, temporal, central regions, suggesting regulatory role organizing dynamics. In contrast, only 1 cross-brain-cross-hemisphere link, attenuating robust right-to-right-brain connectivity moments that communicates socio-affective signals. Furthermore, while level behavior was comparable two interactions, brain-behavior associations emerged exchange. Mother-child temporal-temporal linked shared gaze degree child engagement empathic correlated frontal-frontal synchrony. Our findings indicate co-presence underpinned by specific neurobiological processes should studied depth. Electroencephalograph (EEG) hyperscanning allows studying Interpersonal Neural Synchrony (INS) between two or more individuals across different social conditions, including parent-infant interactions. Signal pre-processing is crucial to optimize computation of INS estimates; however, few attempts have been made at comparing the impact dyadic EEG data methods on estimates. collected 31 mother-infant dyads (8-10 months) engaged in a Face-to-Face Still-Face Procedure were pre-processed with versions same pipeline, "automated" and "manual". Cross-frequency PLV theta (3-5Hz, 4-7Hz) alpha (6-9Hz, 8-12Hz) frequency bands computed after automated manual compared through Pearson's correlations Repeated Measures ANOVAs. PLVs theta, but not alpha, band significantly higher than pre-processing. Moreover, pipeline rejected lower percentage ICs epochs pipeline. While no direct comparison existing pipelines was made, this first study assessing methodological decisions, particularly degree automatization, cross-frequency dataset dyads. Non-directional phase-based indexes such as seem be affected by automatization Future research should strive for standardization methods.

Temporal coordination during infant-caregiver social interaction is thought to be crucial for supporting early language acquisition and cognitive development. Despite a growing prevalence of theories suggesting that increased inter-brain synchrony associates with many key aspects interactions such as mutual gaze, little known about how this arises Here, we investigated the role gaze onsets potential driver synchrony. We extracted dual EEG activity around naturally occurring in N = 55 dyads (mean age 12 months). differentiated between two types onset, depending on each partners' role. 'Sender' were defined at time when either adult or infant made shift towards their partner was already looking them (mutual) not (non-mutual). 'Receiver' Contrary our hypothesis found that, naturalistic interaction, both non-mutual associated changes sender, but receiver's brain increases above baseline. Further, mutual, compared inter Overall, results suggest effects are strongest intra-brain level, 'sender' 'receiver' gaze.

A growing body of research shows that the universal capacity for music perception and production emerges early in development. Possibly building on this predisposition, caregivers around world often communicate with infants using songs or speech entailing song-like characteristics. This suggests might be one earliest developing most accessible forms interpersonal communication, providing a platform studying communicative behavior. However, little has examined truly contexts. The current work aims to facilitate development experimental approaches rely dynamic naturalistic social interactions. Despite shared procedures with adults, electroencephalography (EEG) in early development presents many specificities that need to be considered for good quality data collection. In this paper, we provide an overview of the most representative cognitive developmental EEG studies focusing on neuroimaging technique young participants, such as attrition and artifacts. We also summarize results research obtained time time-frequency domains use more advanced signal processing methods. Finally, briefly introduce three recent standardized pipelines will help promote replicability comparability across experiments ages. Parent–infant EEG is a novel hyperscanning paradigm to measure social interaction simultaneously in the brains of parents and infants. The number studies using parent–infant dual-EEG as theoretical framework brain-to-brain synchrony during rapidly growing, while methodology for measuring not yet uniform. While adult quickly improving, open databases, tutorials, methodological validations with infants are largely missing. Most current research in cognitive neuroscience uses standardized non-ecological experiments to study the developing brain. But these approaches do a poor job of mimicking real-world, and thus can only provide distorted picture how operations brain development unfold outside lab. Communicative signals such as eye contact increase infants' brain activation to visual stimuli and promote joint attention. Our study assessed whether communicative during attention enhance infant-caregiver dyads' neural responses objects, their synchrony. To track mutual processes, we applied rhythmic stimulation (RVS), presenting images of objects 12-month-old infants mothers (n = 37 dyads), while recorded activity (i.e., steady-state evoked potentials, SSVEPs) with electroencephalography (EEG) hyperscanning. Within dyads, either communicatively showed the infant or watched without engagement. cues increased mothers' SSVEPs at central-occipital-parietal, central electrode sites, respectively. Infants significantly more gaze behaviour Dyadic synchrony (SSVEP amplitude envelope correlations, AECs) was not modulated by cues. Taken together, maternal in shape own processes. We show that cortical processing, thus play an essential role social learning. Future studies need elucidate effect on Finally, our introduces RVS dynamics contexts.

Very preterm (VPT) birth is a major risk condition for child development and parental wellbeing, mainly due to multiple sources of stress (e.g., separation pain exposure) during the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) stay.
