Soil salinization threatens food security and ecosystem health, is one of the important drivers to degradation many ecosystems around world. microorganisms have extremely high diversity participate in a variety key ecological processes. They are guarantees for soil health sustainable development. However, our understanding function under change increased fragmented. Here, we summarize changes microbial influence diverse natural ecosystems. We particularly focus on bacteria fungi salt stress their emerging functions (such as mediated biogeochemical processes). This study also discusses how use microbiome saline soils deal with supporting ecosystems, puts forward knowledge gaps research directions that need be strengthened future. Due rapid development molecular-based biotechnology (especially high-throughput sequencing technology), community composition functional genes been extensively characterized different habitats. Clarifying responding pattern microbial-mediated nutrient cycling developing utilizing weaken adverse effects plants soil, which guiding significance agricultural production management lands.

Abstract Land degradation is a complex socio-environmental threat, which generally occurs as multiple concurrent pathways that remain largely unexplored in Europe. Here we present an unprecedented analysis of land multi-degradation 40 continental countries, using twelve dataset-based processes were modelled convergence and combination Europe’s agricultural (and arable) environments. Using Multi-degradation Index, find up to 27%, 35% 22% (~2 million km 2 ) arable (~1.1 lands are currently threatened by one, two, three drivers degradation, while 10–11% pan-European agricultural/arable landscapes cumulatively affected four at least five processes. We also explore the pattern spatially interacting processes, emphasizing major combinations across national boundaries. Our results will enable policymakers develop knowledge-based strategies for mitigation other critical European sustainable development goals.

Soil is an extremely complex and dynamic matrix, in part, due to the wide diversity of organisms living within it. organic matter (SOM) fundamental substrate on which delivery ecosystem services depends, providing metabolic fuel drive soil function. As such, studying metabolome (the concentration low molecular weight metabolites), as a subset SOM, holds potential greatly expand our understanding behaviour, fate, interaction functional significance small molecules soil. Encompassing range chemical classes (including amino acids, peptides, lipids carbohydrates) large number individual (ca. n = 105 106), resultant (indirect) output several layers biological hierarchy, namely metagenome, metatranscriptome metaproteome. it may also provide support validation for these "multi-omics" datasets. We present case increased use untargeted metabolomics biochemistry, particularly furthering functions driving SOM composition biogeochemical cycling. Further, we discuss scale challenge terms metabolite extraction, analysis interpretation plant-soil-microbial systems. Lastly, highlight key knowledge gaps currently limit metabolomic approaches better understand processes, including: (i) datasets; (ii) source, emission fate soil-derived volatile compounds (VOCs), (iii) assessing temporal fluxes metabolites, (iv) monitoring ecological interactions rhizosphere. Significance Mechanization has transformed agriculture over the past century, greatly improving crop production efficiency. However, higher capacity resulted in increased farm vehicle weights. We show that while machinery design maintains constant surface contact stresses, an insidious and largely overlooked threat of subsoil compaction developed. demonstrate modern vehicles induce high soil stresses now exceed critical mechanical thresholds for many arable soils, inducing chronic root zones below tillage depths adversely affecting functioning. draw parallels between heaviest animals walked Earth: sauropods. hypothesize these prehistoric giants may have induced compaction, thus presenting a paradox productivity land supported them.

Abstract Despite the increasing interest in applying composts as soil amendments worldwide, there is a lack of knowledge on short-term effects compost structural and hydraulic properties. Our goal was to study effect vermicompost-based structure, water retention characteristics, aggregate stability plant use efficiency compared that mineral fertilizers food-waste digestate examine if these are evident within short time after application. We set up pot experiment with spring wheat using sandy loamy receiving either fertilizer (MF); dewatered from anaerobic digestion food waste (DG), vermicomposted (VC_DG); sewage sludge-based (C_SS) vermicompost (VC_SS). then monitored calculated balance components (irrigation, outflow, evaporation, transpiration, content). At harvest, we measured shoot biomass, texture, bulk density, characteristics stability. The irrigation (IE) (WUE) were for each treatment by dividing transpiration dry biomass amount used irrigation, respectively. For soil, X-Ray computed tomography visualise pore system organic derive metrics pore-network such its fractal dimension, imaged macroporosity critical diameter. indicated composting vermicomposting resulted more complex diverse porous increased macroporosity. dimensions also can contribute structure formation stabilization their small application rate incubation time, two different types improved holding capacity efficiency. Composting appeared have best at reducing demand evaporation losses plant, likely through pore-size distribution.

Abstract Land degradation is the persistent reduction in capacity of land to support human and other life on Earth (IPBES, 2018). This process jeopardizes provision ecosystem services. The Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 15, ‘Life Land’, includes efforts sustainably manage recover natural ecosystems restore degraded soil. Under umbrella SDG United Nations Convention Combat Desertification (UNCCD) has defined an indicator framework monitor progress toward ‘land neutrality’. We evaluated performance 15.3.1, focusing “…proportion that over total area” for European Union (EU) using TRENDS.EARTH software. assessed impact alternative datasets at different spatial resolutions policy‐relevant data sources cover (CORINE) soil organic carbon (SOC) stock (LUCAS). Our hypothesis was higher resolution sub‐indicators would better identify share provide a clearer picture extent target period. productivity trajectories were adjusted Water Use Efficiency index revealed high improving reported by NDVI trends. Therefore, it advisable use always climate correction assess Replacing default with allowed detection 25–40% more areas. Additionally, integration combined proxy (soil erosion >10 Mg ha −1 yr , SOC concentration <1%) identified additional 50% large EU needs restoration measures.
