Global plastic production surged to 400.3 million metric tons in 2022, contributing significantly environmental pollution. Projections estimate that 13.2 billion of waste will be present ecosystems by 2050. This increase has led substantial human exposure microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs). While their general health impacts are well-documented, the specific effects on cardiovascular remain underexplored. review aims examine presence MPs NPs environment, routes exposure, toxicological implications for system (CVS), focusing oxidative stress, apoptosis, cardiac fibrosis, major adverse events (MACE). A comprehensive literature was conducted using PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar. Relevant studies from past 10 years were selected based keywords like "microplastics," "nanoplastics," "cardiovascular health." found air, water, food, entering body primarily through inhalation, ingestion, dermal contact. These particles induce mitochondrial dysfunction, which impair health. have been detected arterial tissues, particularly atherosclerotic plaques, correlating with increased MACE risk. Abstract The limited available data on human internal exposure poses a significant challenge in assessing the risks associated with micro and nanoplastics (MNPs) to health. A contributing factor this is scarcity of sensitive analytical methods quantify mass concentration plastic polymers blood. In study we present an improved validated method for quantitatively analysing polyethylene (PE), terephthalate (PET), poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC), poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), polypropylene, polystyrene whole blood samples. We introduce apply stringent quality assurance control procedures, including validation using samples continuous monitoring batch analyses ensure reliability. Expanding upon prior pioneering work by Leslie et al. (2022), optimised pyrolysis-gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (Py-GC-MS) conditions enhance sensitivity selectivity. Recovery experiments demonstrated high level accuracy precision, values ranging from 68 109% Applying ( n = 68), identified 64 samples, PE as predominant polymer, followed PVC, PET, PMMA. 17 polymer concentrations were found exceed limit quantitation, mean 1070 ng/mL summed concentrations, between 170 2490 ng/mL. sum across all 68) was 268 These findings underscore pressing need further research aimed at comprehensive MNP quantification matrices, considering potential health implications.

Abstract Emerging evidence indicates that chemical exposures in the environment are overlooked drivers of cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Recent suggests micro- and nanoplastic (MNP) particles derived largely from or mechanical degradation plastics might represent a novel CVD risk factor. Experimental data preclinical models suggest MNPs can foster oxidative stress, platelet aggregation, cell senescence, inflammatory responses endothelial immune cells while promoting range metabolic alterations lead to disease premature death. In humans, various plastics, including polyethylene polyvinylchloride, have been detected atherosclerotic plaques other tissues, pericardia, epicardial adipose pericardial myocardia, left atrial appendages. measurable levels within thrombi seem accumulate preferentially areas vascular lesions. Their presence carotid is associated with subsequent increased incidence events. To further investigate possible causal role CVD, future studies should focus on large, prospective cohorts assessing exposure individuals plastic-related pollution, routes absorption, existence putative safety limit, correspondence between accumulation timing development, pathophysiological mechanisms instigated by pertinent concentrations MNPs. Data such would allow design preventive, even therapeutic, strategies. Meanwhile, existing reducing plastic production use will produce benefits for human health. This goal could be achieved through UN Global Plastics Treaty currently negotiation.

In the past decade, microplastics (MPs) have drawn significant attention as widespread environmental contaminants, with research increasingly highlighting their harmful effects on respiratory health in aquatic and terrestrial organisms. Findings revealed human lung tissues, raising concerns about potential role damaging tissue integrity contributing to pulmonary fibrosis-a chronic inflammatory condition characterized by scarring of epithelial tissues due accumulated extracellular matrix, triggered factors such alcohol, pathogens, genetic mutations, pollutants. this review, we explore both well-studied lesser-studied mechanisms signaling pathways, aiming shed light how might act mediators that activate distinct, often overlooked cascades. This review searched PubMed Google Scholar using keywords like "plastic," "microplastic," "lung fibrosis," "pulmonary system," "exposure route," "signaling pathways," combined "OR" "AND" singular plural forms. Processed foods have been part of the American diet for decades, with key roles in providing a safe, available, affordable, and nutritious food supply. The USDA Food Guides beginning 1916 US Dietary Guidelines Americans (DGA) since 1980 included various types commonly consumed processed (e.g., heated, fermented, dried) as their recommendations. However, there are multiple classification systems based on “level” processing, additional evidence is needed to establish specific properties classified “highly” or “ultra”-processed (HPF/UPFs). Importantly, many captured under HPF/UPF definitions, ranging from ready-to-eat fortified whole grain breakfast cereals sugar-sweetened beverages baked goods. consequences implementing dietary guidance limit all intake currently may require scrutiny evaluate impact consumers’ ability meet daily nutrient recommendations access affordable food, ultimately, health outcomes. Humans are constantly exposed to micro- and nanosized plastics (MNPs); however, there is still limited understanding of their fate within the body, partially due limitations with current analytical techniques. The study assessed appropriateness pyrolysis–gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (Py-GC-MS) analysis for quantification a range polymers in human blood. An extraction protocol that reduced matrix interferences (false positives) polyethylene (PE) polyvinyl chloride (PVC) was developed validated. Extraction recoveries ranged 7–109%, although surface-modified polystyrene (carboxylated) increased nanoparticle from 17 52%. Realistic detection limits were calculated each polymer, accounting suppression recovery. These up 20 times higher than nominal Milli-Q water. Finally, method tested pilot Australian population. PE but present, no other above limits. It concluded Py-GC-MS currently not suitable PVC biological matrices presence nonspecific pyrolysis products. Furthermore, while it plausible detect some blood, estimated exposure concentrations needed approaching technique.
