Lake ecosystems confront escalating challenges to their stability and resilience, most intuitively leading biodiversity loss, necessitating effective preservation strategies safeguard aquatic environments. However, the complexity of ecological processes governing lake under multi-stressor interactions remains an ongoing concern, primarily due insufficient long-term bioindicator data, particularly concerning macroinvertebrate biodiversity. Here we utilize a unique, continuous, in situ biomonitoring dataset spanning from 2011 2019 investigate spatio-temporal variation communities. We assess impact four crucial environmental parameters on Dongting Taihu, i.e., water quality, hydrology, climate change, land use. These two systems are representative lakes with Yangtze-connected disconnected subtropical floodplains China. find alarming trend declining taxonomic functional diversities among communities despite improvements quality. Primary contributing factors this decline include persistent anthropogenic pressures, alterations human use around lakes, including intensified nutrient loads reduced habitat heterogeneity. Notably, river-lake connectivity is pivotal shaping differential responses multiple stressors. Our results highlight strong correlation between within 2–5 km radius 0.05–2.5 shorelines Lakes respectively. findings importance implementing buffer zones specific spatial scales enhance diversity, securing essential ecosystem services enhancing resilience ecosystems.

ABSTRACT Many low‐order streams are recipients of effluents from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and combined sewer overflows (CSOs). Not only do these facilities have to meet fewer requirements compared their bigger counterparts in more densely populated areas, but they also discharge into smaller, vulnerable streams, with low dilution potential. Although local point sources can dictate the water quality quantity dynamics, barely monitored often not included catchment‐wide analyses. In this case study we measured stream a first‐order, source‐influenced stream. We specifically addressed our monitoring programme, which installation low‐budget probe at CSO outlet monitor overflow timing. By clustering hysteresis loops using Principal Component Analysis, were able identify hydro‐meteorological drivers reveal seasonal patterns nutrient export dynamics. Mobilisation nitrate agricultural clearly dominated event dynamics during periods high soil moisture, while source overlaid catchment responses rest time. Thus, potential was found be controlling factor for Groundwater infiltration system probably increased risk discharges, especially winter spring. summer, spillages occurred as result high‐intensity rainfall. Different stages of drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs) play specific roles in diverse contaminants' removal present natural sources. Although the are recorded to promote adequate water, occurrence pathogenic bacteria (PB) and antibiotic-resistant (ARB) treated changes their diversity abundance as it passed down end users through distribution systems (DWDSs), is a great concern, especially human health. ABSTRACT As climatic extremity intensifies, a fundamental rethink is needed to promote the sustainable use of freshwater resources. Both floods and droughts, including water scarcity, are exacerbating declines in river biodiversity ecosystem services, with consequences for both people nature. Although this global challenge, densely populated regions such as Europe, East Asia North‐America, well most affected by climate change, particularly vulnerable. To date mitigation measures have mainly focused on individual, local‐scale targets, often neglecting hydrological connectivity within catchments interactions among hydrology, biodiversity, change human wellbeing. A comprehensive approach improve infiltration, retention groundwater recharge, thereby mitigating impacts heavy rainfall droughts scarcity. We propose holistic catchment‐scale framework that combines conventional civil engineering methods, nature‐based solutions conservation actions. This integrates legislation, substantial funding governance structure transcends administrative discipline boundaries, enabling coordinated actions across multiple spatial temporal scales. It necessitates collaboration local regional stakeholders citizens, scientists practitioners. vision management resources could synergistic effects support mitigate functional ecosystems deliver benefits people.

We have quantified inputs and fate of nutrients in European fresh marine waters from 1990 to 2018. used the conceptual model GREEN assess impact efforts on curbing nutrient pollution regions. In first two decades, i.e. 1990s through start new millennium, decreased significantly. Nutrient freshwaters sea largely reduced all regions, although at different pace. However, around 2008-2010 trends changed, marking an increase last decade, particularly agricultural diffuse sources. some current are close those estimated beginning 1990s. At end study period, concentrations remain above thresholds congruent with good ecological status water bodies most downstream reaches. policies tackling point sources reach their maximum impact. face this approaching ceiling, sustainable management land becomes pivotal for effective control river basins. The regional approach highlighted differences across Europe that may provide tailored opportunities plan strategies achieving environmental targets.
