In the last ten years, 'nature' and biophilic design have received widespread attention in architecture, especially response to growing environmental challenges. However, open questions controversies remain regarding conceptualizing addressing practice research. This study conducts a literature review discuss as theoretical framework interpret architecture. The following are answered: (1) How has concept of emerged, how can it be defined? (2) what ways contribute goals sustainable architecture? (3) What key strategies design? identifies compares frameworks explains their major elements. We then analyse benefits (e.g., enhance health, well-being, productivity, biodiversity, circularity) achieving sustainability, framed through UN Sustainable Development Goals. results indicate that is more complex richer than mere application vegetation buildings; broadens variety encompassing different types nature from physical, sensory, metaphorical, morphological, material spiritual. Moreover, knowledge gaps identified motivate future research critical reflections on practices.

The concept of ecosystem services has gained a strong political profile during the last 15 years. However, there is no specific EU policy devoted to governing services. This article shows that already embedded in recent (environmentally-related) policies, such as Biodiversity Strategy 2020 and Invasive Alien Species Regulation. Our review 12 policies that, overall, coherence between existing moderate. Policies showing very high are confined arenas address natural ecosystems, forestry, or agriculture. Given sectoral nature most limited options for revision near future, opportunities improving apparent furthering integration implementation at national regional levels.

Humans modify ecosystems and biodiversity worldwide, with negative consequences for ecosystem functioning. Promoting plant diversity is increasingly suggested as a mitigation strategy. However, our mechanistic understanding of how affects the heterotrophic consumer communities remains limited. Here, we disentangle relative importance key components drivers herbivore, predator, parasitoid species richness in experimental forests grasslands. We find that effects on are consistently positive mediated by elevated structural functional communities. The these differs across trophic levels ecosystems, cautioning against ignoring fundamental ecological complexity effects. Importantly, higher trophic-level many cases modifications abundances. In light recently reported drastic declines insect abundances, study identifies important pathways connecting ecosystems.

Due to increasing population pressure and urbanization, as well global climate change impacts, many coastal river deltas are experiencing increased exposure, vulnerability risks linked natural hazards. Mapping the risk profiles of is critical for developing preparedness, mitigation adaptation policies strategies. Current assessments focus predominantly on social factors, typically, do not systematically incorporate a social-ecological systems perspective, which can lead incomplete assessments. We argue that ecosystem services, link both functions human well-being, be used better characterize mutual dependencies between society environment within assessment frameworks. Thus, building existing frameworks, we propose revised indicator-based framework delta environments, supported by list service indicators were identified using systematic literature review. This improved an effective tool address in deltas, enabling multi-hazard across allows more targeted development management measures aimed at reducing from
