Photo-based surveys are widely applied to elicit landscape preferences and assess cultural ecosystem services. Variations in weather light conditions can potentially alter people’s preferences, as sunny landscapes more positively perceived than those under inclement conditions. To assure comparability across pictures, studies usually include photographs taken at days (i.e., blue sky). However, the influence of clouds on has been rarely considered, although color contrasts between sky may attract attention. This study therefore aimed effects by (1) examining differences preference pairs with without clouds), (2) explaining variations through variables from eye-tracking simulation, photo content analysis, Geographic Information System (GIS)-based analysis. Our results indicate no significant pictures when contained a proportion around 22% cloud cover about 39%. higher influenced while clouds, especially combination lower sky, had negative effects. These findings suggest that should pay attention not only appearance terms cloudiness, but they also control different obtain comparable results. Future research address limitations regarding transferability our other types potential perceptions respondents socio-cultural characteristics. Moreover, changing or well diurnal seasonal changes be further explored.

This study examined the evaluation of cultural ecosystem services (CESs) and their impact on well-being in peri-urban areas, using a case Harku municipality, Estonia. CESs, encompassing intangible factors such as emotions values, are crucial for but challenging to assess. To address this, pilot method was developed, involving typology natural environment types (NETs) contact (CTs), assessed by panel local experts. The results revealed that “spiritual, historic, symbolic” gardens exhibited strong positive connection well-being. Blue green spaces offering physical activities aesthetics were also highly rated. Surprisingly, cemeteries scored higher than expected. Agreement among experts varied, with “parks + sporting” showing near-perfect consensus weaker agreement found food production”, “blue providing gathering places”, “green landscape elements education”, highlighting diverse expert perspectives identifying suitable combinations NETs CTs. addresses research-to-practice gaps methodological challenges applying CESs within planning frameworks, valuable insights managing conserving areas. By testing proposed method, this research contributes better understanding how can be effectively integrated into processes, fostering sustainable peri-urbanised regions.

The Life Frames of Values, recently endorsed by Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, articulate four different ways nature matters to people living in, from, with, as nature. These frames distinguish value perceptions of, communicate about, the world. We look expand understandings in framework exploring whether could be mirrored capture how more-than-human natural world may relate people. explore 1) understood, 2) two-way nature–people add current sustainable development discourse. While 'living from' with' can symmetrical relations, in' 'as' have a directional point reference. 'mirrored' contribute meaningful nuances clarification existing framing people–nature while raising questions for further exploration science policy.
