Reaching a better understanding of the policies and politics transitions presents main agenda item in emerging field sustainability transitions. One important requirement for these transitions, such as move towards decarbonized energy system, is redirection acceleration technological change, which play key role. In this regard, several studies have argued need to combine different policy instruments so-called mixes. However, existing mix often fall short reflecting complexity dynamics actual mixes, underlying evaluation their impacts. paper we take first step an extended, interdisciplinary concept based on review bodies literature innovation studies, environmental economics analysis. The introduces clear terminology consists three building blocks elements, processes characteristics, can be delineated by dimensions. Based this, discuss its application analytical framework empirical analyzing impact change. Throughout illustrate proposed using example fostering transition German system renewable power generation technologies. Finally, derive implications suggest avenues future research.

Understanding how policymaking processes can influence the rate and direction of socio-technical change towards sustainability is an important, yet underexplored research agenda in field transitions. Some studies have sought to explain individual policy instruments transitions, politics surrounding this process. We argue that such cause wider feedback mechanisms not only their own future development, but also other same area. Consequently, by extending scope analysis a mix allows us account for multiple effects on resultant influencing underpin further change. This paper takes first step regard combining innovation literatures conceptualise co-evolutionary dynamics mixes systems. focus help change, changes system shape evolution mix. To do so we draw insights from literature, propose novel conceptual framework. In paper, illustrate using example zero carbon homes UK. conclude with deriving implications analysing designing dynamic
