This paper explores the technical and economic characteristics of an accelerated energy transition to 2050, using new datasets for renewable energy. The analysis indicates that efficiency technologies are core elements transition, their synergies likewise important. Favourable economics, ubiquitous resources, scalable technology, significant socio-economic benefits underpin such a transition. Renewable can supply two-thirds total global demand, contribute bulk greenhouse gas emissions reduction is needed between now 2050 limiting average surface temperature increase below 2 °C. Enabling policy regulatory frameworks will need be adjusted mobilise six-fold acceleration renewables growth needed, with highest estimated wind solar PV technologies, complemented by high level efficiency. Still, ensure eventual elimination carbon dioxide require technology innovation, notably transport manufacturing sectors, which remain largely ignored in international debate. More attention emerging infrastructure issues as charging other sector coupling implications.

Abstract Global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions can be traced to five economic sectors: energy, industry, buildings, transport and AFOLU (agriculture, forestry other land uses). In this topical review, we synthesise the literature explain recent trends in global regional each of these sectors. To contextualise our present estimates GHG by sector from 1990 2018, describing major sources growth, stability decline across ten regions. Overall, data emphasise that progress towards reducing has been limited. The prominent pattern is a continuation underlying drivers with few signs emerging limits demand, nor deep shift delivery low zero carbon services We observe moderate decarbonisation energy systems Europe North America, driven fuel switching increasing penetration renewables. By contrast, rapidly industrialising regions, fossil-based have continuously expanded, only very recently slowing down their growth. Strong demand for materials, floor area, travel growth buildings sectors, particularly Eastern Asia, Southern Asia South-East Asia. An expansion agriculture into carbon-dense tropical forest areas increases Latin Africa. Identifying, understanding, tackling most persistent climate-damaging sectors fundamental concern research policy as humanity treads deeper Anthropocene.

The electrical power sector plays an important role in the economic growth and development of every country around world. Total global demand for electric energy is growing both developed developing economies. commitment to decarbonization economies, which would mean replacing fossil fuels with renewable sources (RES) as well electrification transport heating a means tackle warming dangerous climate change, lead surge electricity consumption worldwide. Hence, it appears reasonable that should embed principles sustainable into its functioning operation. In addition, events such recent European gas crisis have emerged result massive deployment renewables need be studied prevented. This review aims at assessing sector, focusing on providers consumers represented by businesses households are gradually becoming prosumers market energy. Furthermore, also focuses impact utility side their benefits grid. identifies major factors sector.

Many researchers, policymakers and other stakeholders have explored supported efforts to transition towards more sustainable forms of low-carbon mobility. Often, discussion will flow from a narrow view consumer perceptions surrounding passenger vehicles—presuming that users act in rationalist, instrumental, predictable patterns. In this paper, we hold better understanding the social demographic electric vehicles (compared mobility, including conventional cars) is needed. We provide comparative mixed methods assessment demographics mobility stated preferences for vehicles, drawing primarily on survey distributed than 5000 respondents across Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway Sweden. examine how gender influences preferences; experience form education occupation shape aging household size impact preferences. doing so hope reveal complex dynamics behind potential adopters consider calculate various aspects vehicle-to-grid (V2G) systems. particular, our results suggest predominantly men, those with higher levels full time employment, especially occupations civil society or academia, below middle age (30–45), are most likely buy them. However, analysis also reveals market segments where may take root, e.g. among income females retirees/pensioners. Moreover, few were orientated V2G, independent their attributes. Our empirical can inform ongoing discussions about energy transport policy, drivers environmental change, deliberations over sustainability transitions.

Abstract Short Circuiting Policy examines clean energy policies to understand why US states are not on track meet the climate crisis. After two decades of leadership, American slipping in their commitment transition away from dirty fossil fuels toward cleaner sources, including wind and solar. The author argues that organized combat between advocate opponent interest groups is central explaining have stopped expanding even started weakening renewable policies. Fossil fuel companies electric utilities played a key role spreading denial. Now, they turned delay, working block passing or being implemented driving retrenchment. Clean advocates typically lack sufficient power overcome utilities’ opposition policy. builds policy feedback theory, showing conditions under which retrenchment more likely. Depending relative political influence, will work drive either directly by with legislators, staff, regulators indirectly through parties, public, courts. Also, likely effects easy predict—an effect termed “the fog enactment.” But over time, federated can learn anticipate policies’ consequences networks cross state lines. Examining past century, Texas’s, Kansas’s, Arizona’s, Ohio’s laws twenty-first shows how opponents thwarted progress
