Antibiotics represent one of the main discoveries last century that changed treatment a large array infections in significant way. However, increased consumption has led to an exposure bacterial communities and ecosystems amount antibiotic residues. This paper aims provide brief overview primary drivers associated with occurrence environment. Furthermore, we attempted summarize behavior residues environment necessity their detection quantification. Also, updated scientific regulatory facts about environmental discharge human antibiotics risk assessment. We propose contamination should be diminished beginning from regulating causes (such as consumption) ending assessment. Some important intermediate steps are represented by quantification characterization environment, which could come support future decisions.

Abstract Antimicrobial pharmaceuticals are classified as emergent micropollutants of concern, implying that even at low concentrations, long-term exposure to the environment can have significant eco-toxicological effects. There is a lack standardized regulatory framework governing permissible antibiotic content for monitoring environmental water quality standards. Therefore, indiscriminate discharge antimicrobials potentially active concentrations into urban wastewater treatment facilities rampant. Antimicrobials may exert selective pressure on bacteria, leading resistance development and eventual health consequences. The emergence clinically important multiple antibiotic-resistant bacteria in untreated hospital effluents plants (WWTPs) has been linked continuous antimicrobials. levels antibiotics their correlation evolution spread resistant need be elucidated help formulation mitigation measures. This review explores frequently detected gives comprehensive coverage bacterial mechanisms different classes through expression wide variety genes either inherent and/or exchanged among or acquired from reservoir (ARGs) systems. Abstract Antibiotics in the aquatic environment is a major problem because of emergence antibiotic resistance. The long‐term ecological impact on unknown. Many sources allow entry antibiotics into environment, including wastewater‐treatment plants (WWTPs), agricultural runoff, hospital effluent, and landfill leachate. Concentrations vary significantly; studies have shown fluoroquinolones, tetracycline, macrolides, sulfonamides, penicillins to reach 2900, 1500, 9700, 21 400, 1600 ng L –1 wastewater effluent samples, respectively. However, concentrations are highly variable between different countries depend several factors seasonal variation, prescription, WWTP operating procedures. The extensive application of antibiotics in human and veterinary medicine has led to their widespread occurrence a natural aquatic environment. Global health crisis is associated with the fast development antimicrobial resistance, as more infectious diseases cannot be treated than once. Sulfamethoxazole, trimethoprim ciprofloxacin are most commonly detected water systems worldwide. persistent toxic nature these makes elimination by conventional treatment methods at wastewater plants almost impossible. advanced oxidation processes heterogeneous photocatalysis over TiO2-based materials promising solution. This highly efficient technology potential sustainable, cost-efficient energy-efficient. A comprehensive review on various photocatalysts for degradation sulfamethoxazole, focused highlighting photocatalytic performance under reaction conditions (different amounts pollutant photocatalyst, pH, light source, media, presence inorganic ions, organic matter, oxidants). Mineralization efficiency ecotoxicity final products have been also considered. Further research needs presented based literature findings. Among them, design sunlight, stable, recyclable cost-effective materials; usage real wastewaters tests; compulsory assessment important tasks order meet requirements industrial application.
