Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is one of the most promising technologies to tackle climate challenges. This study provides a comprehensive overview of the challenges to achieving carbon neutrality at county level in China and offers targeted recommendations, laying groundwork for future specialized research this area. A total 283 relevant studies (2004–2023) were analyzed assess county-level emissions through three phases: bibliometric analysis, frontier prospects. Bibliometric findings reveal that publication trends largely influenced by domestic foreign policies. Keyword cluster discerns ten primary themes, ranging from conceptual frameworks methodologies. The analysis literature highlights leading areas, which include pathway, driving factors, spatiotemporal variation emissions, co-effects pollutants reduction, China's rural areas.
