In

city

alternative

imaginary

low-carbon
city.

This
paper
presents
an
empirical
investigation
into
the
effects
of
energy
transition
and
digitization
on
carbon
dioxide
emissions,
serving
as
a
proxy
for
environmental
sustainability,
across
28
Chinese
provinces
from
2000
to
2021.
Utilizing
both
static
dynamic
regression
analyses,
study
reveals
significant
driving
effect
primarily
through
reduction
in
emissions.
Notably,
this
influence
is
more
pronounced
eastern
region
China,
followed
by
central
western
regions,
indicating
regional
heterogeneity
impact
transition.
Furthermore,
found
have
substantial
moderating
effect,
enhancing
conservation
emission
reductions.

In
the
face
of
climate
change
and
associated
energy
system
change,
there
is
a
growing
literature
more
general
recognition
'four
Ds'
(decarbonization,
decentralization,
digitalization,
democratization).
Yet
has
been
very
little
quantitative
work
that
analyzes
public
perceptions
these
changes.
Utilizing
data
from
Canada-wide,
nationally
representative
survey
(n
=
941),
this
study
conducted
provincial
regional
assessments
to
spatially
explore
public's
views
moves
toward
innovative
local
through
development
what
we
call
Local
Smart
Grids
(LSGs).
Through
descriptive
statistics
t-tests,
sought
answer
three
main
questions:
i)
To
extent
does
support
democracy
via
new
systems?
ii)
What
desire
in
terms
participation?
iii)
motivates
participate?
We
find
overall
for
across
Canada,
yet
varied
among
provinces
regions.
Canadians
seem
want
participate
democracy,
although
found
strong
preference
passive
participatory
actions.
Additionally,
predominantly
motivated
by
environmental
factors,
including
combating
with
community
social
motivations
playing
secondary
role,
followed
financial
motivations.
These
findings,
some
first
their
kind
realm
provide
useful
insights
relevant
scholars,
policymakers,
practitioners
working
on
LSG
implementation
as
well
others
an
interest

There
is
increasing
enthusiasm
at
urban
and
municipal
scales
for
leading
sustainability
transitions,
amid
higher
level
endorsement

expectation
of
such
leadership.
Yet
this
downscaling
responsibility
transition
requires
a
greater
critical
focus.
It
raises
questions
how
evenly
spread
the
capacity
to
lead
on
is,
it
relates
complex
differentiated
multi-scalar
governance
structures
political
landscapes
within
which
actors
are
situated.
This
article
draws
upon
evidence
from
mixed
methods
comparative
analysis
across
Europe
exploring
different
pressures
potential
that
exist
municipalities.
Our
central
aim
critically
interrogate
what
municipalities
doing
achieve
post-carbon
energy
beyond
lofty
aspirations.
Departing

our

conditions
