Plastic pollution is a global concern that has grown ever more acute in recent years. Most research focused on the impact of plastic marine environments. However, increasingly being detected terrestrial and freshwater environments with key inland sources including landfills, where it accessible to wide range organisms. Birds are effective bioindicators pollutants for many reasons, their high mobility intra- interspecific variation trophic levels. Freshwater bird species under-represented compared species. We reviewed 106 studies (spanning from 1994 onwards) have plastics dwelling and/or habitats, identifying knowledge gaps. Seventy-two solely macroplastics (fragments >5 mm), 22 microplastic <5 mm) studies. A further 12 identified as both microplastics macroplastics. No study investigated nanoplastic (particles <100 nm) exposure. Research date geographical species' biases while ignoring sequestration free-living freshwater, Building baseline search presented here, we urge researchers develop validate standardised field sampling techniques laboratory analytical protocols such Raman spectroscopy allow quantification identification micro- nanoplastics therein. Future should consistently report internalised background concentrations, types, sizes forms plastics. This will enable better understanding routes exposure birds environments, providing comprehensive insight into potential impacts birds.

Biomarkers play a pivotal role in monitoring the ecological integrity of aquatic environments. They offer valuable insights into impacts pollutants and environmental stressors on health ecosystems. By assessing changes biomarker levels or activities, scientists can effectively identify quantify exposure to effects contaminants. This review illustrates different types classes biomarkers their application understanding how affect organisms at molecular, cellular, organismal levels. In addition, integrating with assessments is discussed, emphasizing importance considering multiple biological organization monitoring. Additionally, this discusses recent advancements research through development novel biomarkers, integration omics technologies, bioinformatics, real-time monitoring, assessments, risk assessment management.

Emerging pollutants increasingly threaten aquatic ecosystems and human health. However, the risk assessment of these is constrained by insufficient toxicity data for species. In this study, a predictive framework has been established to predict potential across 16 species, including marine freshwater species varying trophic levels simulate their sensitivity distributions (SSDs). Machine learning analysis indicated that per- polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) organophosphate esters (OPEs) exhibited higher in compared The presence aromatic rings chlorine substituents was associated with increased OPEs, alkyl OPEs showed positive correlation side chain length. Key parameters affecting PFAS included length, substituent type, number ether bonds. Additionally, comprehensive ecological framework, integrating persistence, bioaccumulation, toxicity, concentration, developed evaluate 13 PFASs 6 Bohai Sea. Notably, our identified several compounds, such as perfluorododecanoic acid, perfluoro(3,5-dioxahexanoic) tris(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate, previously considered low or nonrisk, posing significant risks region. Thus, offers robust tool advancing emerging pollutants.

ABSTRACT Aquatic invertebrates play a pivotal role in (eco)toxicological assessments because they offer ethical, cost‐effective and repeatable testing options. Additionally, their significance the food chain ability to represent diverse aquatic ecosystems make them valuable subjects for studies. To ensure consistency comparability across studies, international (eco)toxicology guidelines have been used establish standardised methods protocols data collection, analysis interpretation. However, current primarily focus on limited number of invertebrate species, mainly from Arthropoda, Mollusca Annelida. These are suitable basic toxicity screening, effectively assessing immediate severe effects toxic substances organisms. For more comprehensive ecologically relevant assessments, particularly those addressing long‐term ecosystem‐wide impacts, we recommended use broader diversity since present choice taxa exacerbates scope ecotoxicological This review provides overview focusing major how assess impact chemicals environments. The work supports broad‐taxa approach environmental as it better represents natural populations inhabiting various ecosystems. Advances omics other biochemical computational techniques feasible, enabling mechanistic studies non‐model By combining these approaches with vitro together approach, researchers can gain insights into less‐explored impacts pollution, such changes population diversity, development tolerance transgenerational inheritance pollution responses, organism phenotypic plasticity, biological invasion outcomes, social behaviour changes, metabolome regeneration phenomena, disease susceptibility tissue pathologies. also emphasises need harmonised data‐reporting standards minimum annotation checklists that research results findable, accessible, interoperable reusable (FAIR), maximising reusability data. ultimate goal is encourage integrated holistic problem‐focused collaboration between scientific disciplines, standardisation organisations decision‐making bodies, transdisciplinary knowledge co‐production One‐Health approach.

A soft acid-soft base interaction is highly predictable. However, we demonstrate how the crystal packing of newly synthesized zinc framework [Zn2(5-AIA)2(DPTTZ)]·DMF (where 5-AIA = 5-aminoisophthalic acid, DPTTZ N,N'-di(4-pyridyl)thiazolo-[5,4-d]thiazole, DMF N,N'-dimethylformamide) directs an unexpected between acid Hg(II) and hard oxygen instead having a center like nitrogen sulfur in system attributed to strong solvent favorable ionic radius ion for chelation. This engenders selective sensing through "turn-off" emission quenching water (limit detection (2.174 ± 0.06) × 10-9 M) along with natural resources broad pH range. quantum-chemical calculation elucidates turn-off mechanism encompassed atoms inside framework.

Growing evidence indicates that human activities are causing cancer rates to rise in both and wildlife populations. This is due the inability of ancestral anti-cancer defences cope with modern environmental risks. The evolutionary mismatch between oncogenic risks evolved has far-reaching effects on various biological aspects at different timeframes, demanding a comprehensive study biology ecology affected species. Firstly, increased activation leads excessive energy expenditure, affecting other functions potentially health issues like autoimmune diseases. Secondly, tumorigenesis itself can impact important fitness-related parameters such as competitiveness, predator evasion, resistance parasites, dispersal capacity. Thirdly, rising influence species' life-history traits, often favoring early reproduction offset fitness costs associated cancer. However, this strategy its limits, it may not ensure sustainability species if continue rise. Lastly, some evolve additional defences, uncertain consequences for their future path. In summary, we argue exposure cancer-causing substances complex, ranging from immediate responses long-term changes. Understanding these processes, especially context conservation biology, urgently needed.
