Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have been detected in soils worldwide, suggesting that soil serves as a substantial reservoir for these compounds. This paper provides comprehensive overview of the origin PFAS contamination sediment, well environmental impacts associated with distribution mediums. In this review, we also discuss effects on microbes, plants, terrestrial food web, sediment benthic microorganisms. The highest concentration was found exposed to aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF), manufacturing biosolids, compared landfills, atmospheric deposition, industrial discharge, which are other three sources. Exposure has demonstrated negative richness, diversity, population structure bacterial species. It observed interfere regular functioning microorganisms, organisms sediment. Nevertheless, current data is insufficient grasp complete spectrum comprehensively. Moreover, accumulation vegetables, earthworms cause concern, they can eventually enter chain through trophic transfer processes. Finally, challenges possible strategies be implemented restrict dispersion sediments soil.

Organic contaminants of emerging concern (OCECs) originating from assorted sources have attracted increasing attention latterly as most them are not under routine surveillance or effective regulation but possess persistent, bioaccumulative, and toxic potential. Massive terrestrial inputs proximity to intense human activities elevated OCEC contamination in many estuaries. The present review outlines the current knowledge on environmental occurrence fate, well bioavailability nine classes OCECs, i.e., per- polyfluoroalkyl substances, alternative halogenated flame retardants, organophosphate esters, chlorinated paraffins, ionic surfactants, phthalate alternatives, polyhalogenated carbazoles, synthetic antioxidants, bisphenol A alternatives global Available data documented prevalence studied OCECs estuarine compartments around world, particularly North America, Europe, Asia. Their spatiotemporal trends, vertical distributions water column, multi-media partitioning mainly dependent anthropogenic impacts (e.g., production consumption patterns, urbanization, industrialization, waste treatment), hydrodynamics, meteorological conditions, characteristics media interactions with physiochemical properties OCECs. Bioaccumulation biomagnification also been reported for which favor those moderate hydrophobicity, considerable proteophilicity, satisfactory resistance degradation biological transformation. To comprehensively elucidate exposure ecosystems big picture, future research is warranted various fields, including chemistry (eco-)toxicology, may involve more interdisciplinary collaborations.
