Healthy soil is foundational to human health. needed grow crops, provides food, and sustains populations. It supports diverse ecosystems critical ecological services such as pollination. stores water prevents floods. captures carbon slows global climate change. Soil pollution a great growing threat may be polluted by heavy metals, organic chemicals pesticides, biological pathogens, micro/nanoplastic particles. Pollution reduces soil's ability yield food. results in food crop contamination disease. pollutants wash into rivers causing pollution. Deforestation causes erosion, liberates sequestered pollutants, generates airborne dust. of air, water, responsible for at least 9 million deaths each year. More than 60% pollution-related disease death due cardiovascular Recognizing the importance health, European Commission EU Action Plan 2050: A Planet All, have determined that must reduced levels cause no harm or ecosystem We are thus required create toxic-free environment, respect concept safe operating space humanity, sustain health our planet future generations. This review article summarizes current knowledge links between discusses more important their effects.

The European Commission asked EFSA to update its 2009 risk assessment on arsenic in food carrying out a hazard of inorganic (iAs) and using the revised exposure issued by 2021. Epidemiological studies show that chronic intake iAs via diet and/or drinking water is associated with increased several adverse outcomes including cancers skin, bladder lung. CONTAM Panel used benchmark dose lower confidence limit based response (BMR) 5% (relative increase background incidence after adjustment for confounders, BMDL05) 0.06 μg iAs/kg bw per day obtained from study skin cancer as Reference Point (RP). Inorganic As genotoxic carcinogen additional epigenetic effects applied margin (MOE) approach characterisation. In adults, MOEs are low (range between 2 0.4 mean consumers 0.9 0.2 at 95th percentile exposure, respectively) such raise health concern despite uncertainties.

Native American communities suffer disproportionately from elevated metal exposures and increased risk for cardiovascular diseases diabetes. DNA methylation is a sensitive biomarker of aging-related processes novel epigenetic-based "clocks" can be used to estimate accelerated biological aging that may underlie risk. Metals alter methylation, yet little known about their individual combined impact on epigenetic age acceleration. Our objective was investigate the associations metals several methylation-based measures in Strong Heart Study (SHS) cohort.

Groundwater arsenic (As) contamination is a serious environmental and public health concern worldwide. Adverse outcomes poor socio-economic conditions made the scenario worse in Ganga–Brahmaputra–Meghna (GBM) plains, including Bihar state of India. Recently, population has been experiencing high risks As exposure from drinking water foods. However, limited studies are available on groundwater As, its transfer to foodstuffs, associated effects for state. Therefore, this review addressed current subsequent edible plants, local Bihar. Apart other remediation options, potential bioremediation was also explored as an effective way mitigation. Among four major agro-climatic zones Bihar, numbers As-affected districts situated Zone I II, respectively. The risk cancers human organs like skin, bladder, kidney, liver, lung increasing with prevalence levels, particularly near north Ganga river. A significant correlation found between maximum levels blood. Food items wheat could play role apart water. Still, mitigation approach solely focused water, measures necessary reduce foodstuffs. Although several indigenous bacterial strains were promising further understanding essential their application. Moreover, policies regulations needed based spatial variation contamination, conditions, demographic characteristics.

Arsenic chronic exposure, particularly in its inorganic form, represents a significant public health concern. This study was conducted Arica, the northernmost city country, whose inhabitants have been exposed to arsenic both naturally through drinking water and anthropogenically due toxic waste disposal site. We explored changes levels cohort of pregnant women their children over decade, identifying exposure trends determinants. used data on maternal urine samples during pregnancy, collected by Health Authority between 2013 2016 (measurement 1), followed up with assessments 2023 2). Temporal concentration were analyzed using Wilcoxon Signed-Rank test, mixed linear regression model employed determine which factors contributed urinary levels. did not observe differences mean concentrations two-time points (p = 0.4026). The revealed that consuming bottled had 8.3% lower than those tap (95% CI: −15.36 −0.54%). Additionally, from ethnic groups 8.64% higher 0.49 17.5%), while caregivers education showed 13.67% reduction −25.06 −0.56%). Despite mitigation efforts, these findings underscore ongoing risk among vulnerable populations. They further emphasize importance addressing natural contamination implementing targeted interventions reduce disparities associated socioeconomic demographic factors.
