Fipronil and imidacloprid have been widely detected in UK surface waters recent years, often at concentrations that ecotoxicological studies shown can harm aquatic life. Down-the-drain (DTD) passage of pet flea tick treatments are being implicated as an important source, with many the UK's 22 million cats dogs receiving routine, year-round preventative doses containing these parasiticides. The Water Industry's 3rd Chemical Investigation Programme (UKWIR CIP3) has confirmed wastewater a major entry pathway for chemicals into waters, but routes by which they enter system remain unclear. We addressed this knowledge gap conducting first quantification DTD emissions from 98 treated spot-on ectoparasiticides fipronil or imidacloprid, through bathing, bed washing owners' hands. Both were 100 % washoff samples, bathing accounting largest per event (up to 16.8 applied 24.5 fipronil). Modelled account frequency emitting activities, owner handwashing was identified source population overall, handwash occurring least 28 days following product application estimated 4.9 3.1 dog spot-ons passing down-the-drain via route. normalised daily capita all combined 8.7 μg/person/day 2.1 fipronil, equivalent 20–40 load wastewater, UKWIR CIP3 data. Within current international regulatory framework adhered UK, environmental exposure veterinary medicines intended use small companion animals is assumed be low, pathways not considered. recommend systematic review regulations practices address overlooked pollution pathway.

This research report provides a comprehensive overview of the historical trends in heavy metal concentrations Pontic shad (Alosa immaculata) populations from both Danube River and Black Sea, while also exploring potential influence global warming on accumulation. Through bibliometric modeling analysis, it reveals significant limitations existing international research, particularly lack data impact hydroclimatic changes accumulation Alosa immaculata. Recognizing critical importance studies bioaccumulation shad, this underscores their significance defining tolerance thresholds, quantifying toxic elements along aquatic food chain, enhancing economic sustainability ichthyofauna monitoring efforts. Furthermore, these contribute invaluable insights into complex dynamics ecosystems, offering essential decision-making support for optimizing commercial fishing management practices ensuring robust systems industrial endeavors.

Abstract The Danube is a significant transboundary river on global scale, with several tributaries. effluents from industrial operations and wastewater treatment plants have an impact the river's aquatic ecosystem. These discharges provide threat to life by deteriorating quality of water sediment. Hence, total 16 Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) compounds were analyzed at six locations along river, covering period 12 months. objective was explore temporal spatial fluctuations these chemicals in both study revealed fluctuation concentration PAHs throughout year, levels ranging 224.8 ng/L during summer 365.8 winter. Similarly, sediment samples varied 316.7 ng/g dry weight 422.9 According Europe Drinking Water Directive, exceeded permitted limit 100 ng/L, resulting 124.8% rise 265.8% increase results suggest that potential human-caused sources mostly derived pyrolytic pyrogenic processes, being more dominant. Assessment standards (SQGs) showed sediments below Effect Range Low (ERL), except for acenaphthylene (Acy) fluorene (Fl) concentrations. This suggests there could be occasional biological consequences. cumulative Individual Lifetime Cancer Risk (ILCR) exceeds 1/10 4 adults children all sites.

Abstract Background Prioritisation of chemical pollutants is a major challenge for environmental managers and decision-makers alike, which essential to help focus the limited resources available monitoring mitigation actions on most relevant chemicals. This study extends original NORMAN prioritisation scheme beyond target chemicals, presenting integration semi-quantitative data from retrospective suspect screening expansion existing exposure risk indicators. The utilises retrieved automatically Database System (NDS), including candidate substances prioritisation, data, ecotoxicological effect physico-chemical other properties. Two complementary workflows using are applied first group into six action categories then rank exposure, hazard results ‘target’ ‘suspect screening’ can be combined as multiple lines evidence support decision-making regulatory research actions. Results As proof-of-concept, new was dataset data. To this end, > 65,000 NDS, 2579 supported by wastewater were retrospectively screened in 84 effluent samples, totalling 11 million points. final identified 677 high priority further actions, 7455 medium 326 with potentially lower Among remaining substances, ca. 37,000 should considered uncertainty, while it not possible conclude 19,000 due insufficient information uncertainty identification screening. A degree agreement observed between assigned via analysis screening-based prioritisation. Suspect valuable approach analysis, helping prioritise thousands that insufficiently investigated current programmes. Conclusions updated workflow responds increasing use techniques. Chemical contaminants, such as pesticides, pharmaceuticals and industrial compounds are ubiquitous in surface water sediment areas subject to human activity. While targeted chemical analysis is typically used for quality monitoring, there growing interest applying effect-based methods with vitro bioassays capture the effects of all active contaminants a sample. The current study evaluated biological from two contrasting catchments Aotearoa New Zealand, highly urbanised Whau River catchment Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland) urban mixed agricultural Koreti (New River) Estuary catchment. Two complementary passive sampling devices, Chemcatcher polar chemicals polyethylene (PED) non-polar chemicals, were applied wide range water, while composite samples collected at each site. Bioassays indicative induction xenobiotic metabolism, receptor-mediated effects, genotoxicity, cytotoxicity apical extracts. Most extracts induced moderate strong estrogenic aryl hydrocarbon (AhR) activity, along toxicity bacteria. showed similar patterns extracts, but lower Generally, greater photosynthesis inhibition algal growth than PED though AhR observed compared available ecological trigger values (EBT) evaluate potential risk. For most sites both exceeded EBT estrogenicity, many exceeding EBTs activity inhibition. Of endpoints considered, herbicidal appear be primary risk drivers catchments.

Disruption of the thyroid hormone (TH) system is connected with diverse adverse health outcomes in wildlife and humans. It crucial to develop validate suitable vitro assays capable measuring disruption system. These are also essential comply 3R principles, aiming replace ex vivo tests often utilised chemical assessment. We compared two commonly used applicable for high throughput screening [Luminol Amplex UltraRed (AUR)] assessment inhibition peroxidase (TPO, a enzyme TH synthesis) using several cell lines 21 compounds from different use categories. As investigated derived human rat showed low or undetectable TPO expression, we developed series novel overexpressing protein. The HEK-TPOA7 model was prioritised further research based on stable gene protein expression. Notably, Luminol assay detected significant activity signal even Nthy-ori 3-1 HEK293T without revealing its lack specificity. Conversely, AUR specific activity. Nevertheless, despite specificity, both identified similar peroxidation inhibitors. Over half tested chemicals structures groups caused inhibition, including some widespread environmental contaminants suggesting potential impact synthesis. Furthermore, silico SeqAPASS analysis confirmed similarity across mammals other vertebrate classes, applicability findings vertebrates.
