The combination of urbanization and global warming leads to urban overheating compounds the frequency intensity extreme heat events due climate change. Yet, risk can be mitigated by green-blue-grey infrastructure (GBGI), such as parks, wetlands, engineered greening, which have potential effectively reduce summer air temperatures. Despite many reviews, evidence bases on quantified GBGI cooling benefits remains partial practical recommendations for implementation are unclear. This systematic literature review synthesizes base mitigation related co-benefits, identifies knowledge gaps, proposes their maximize benefits. After screening 27,486 papers, 202 were reviewed, based 51 types categorized under 10 main divisions. Certain (green walls, street trees) been well researched capabilities. However, several other received negligible (zoological garden, golf course, estuary) or minimal (private allotment) attention. most efficient was observed in botanical gardens (5.0 ± 3.5°C), wetlands (4.9 3.2°C), green walls (4.1 4.2°C), trees (3.8 3.1°C), vegetated balconies 2.7°C). Under changing conditions (2070-2100) with consideration RCP8.5, there is a shift subtypes, either within same zone (e.g., Dfa Dfb Cfb Cfa) across zones [continental warm-summer humid] BSk [dry, cold semi-arid] Cwa [temperate] Am [tropical]). These shifts may result lower efficiency current future. Given importance multiple services, it crucial balance functionality, performance, co-benefits when planning future GBGI. inventory assist policymakers planners prioritizing effective interventions overheating, filling research promoting community resilience.

Abstract Nature-based solutions (NBS) can protect, manage and restore natural or modified ecosystems. They are a multidisciplinary, integrated approach to address societal challenges some hazards effectively adaptively, simultaneously providing human well-being biodiversity benefits. NBS applications be easily noticed in circular cities, establishing an urban system that is regenerative accessible. This paper aims offer review on for water management from the literature relevant projects running within COST Action ‘Implementing nature-based creating resourceful city’. The method used study based detailed tracking of specific keywords using Google Scholar, ResearchGate, Academia.edu, ScienceDirect Scopus. Based this review, three main were identified: (i) flood drought protection; (ii) water-food-energy nexus; (iii) purification. shows provide additional benefits, such as improving quality, increasing biodiversity, obtaining social co-benefits, microclimate, reduction energy consumption by indoor climate. concludes systemic change should given higher priority preferred over conventional infrastructure.

Agricultural innovation systems has become a popular approach to understand and facilitate agricultural innovation. However, there is often no explicit reflection on the role of in food transformation how they relate transformative concepts visions (e.g. agroecology, digital agriculture, Agriculture 4.0, AgTech FoodTech, vertical protein transitions). To support such we elaborate importance mission-oriented perspective systems. We review pertinent literature from innovation, transition policy sciences, argue that (MAIS) can help at different geographical scales develop enable transformation, terms forces, catalysts, barriers change. Focus points be mapping missions sub-missions MAIS within across countries, or understanding drivers, networks, governance, theories change, evolution impacts MAIS. Future work needed further conceptual empirical development its connections with existing frameworks. Also, scholars practitioners need reflect technologies MAIS, these represent particular directionality whether also may exnovation.

Climate change and urbanization have resulted in several societal challenges for urban areas. Nature-based solutions (NBS) been positioned as enhancing resilience the face of these challenges. However, body conceptual practical knowledge regarding NBS remains fragmented. This study addresses this gap by means a systematic review literature, to define theoretical concept; its broader significance with respect challenges; key stakeholders planning, implementation management; major barriers enablers uptake. The results reveal that, despite lack consensus about definition NBS, there is shared understanding that concept encompasses human ecological benefits beyond core objective ecosystem conservation, restoration or enhancement. Significant are discussed, along proposed strategic planning framework successful uptake NBS.

Cities are facing a broad range of social and environmental challenges due to the current pressure global urbanization. Nature-based solutions aim utilize green infrastructure improve people’s health wellbeing. The design urban environments must embrace individual ideals citizens stakeholders which can only be achieved if effective methods communication, involvement, feedback ensured. Such procedure creates trust during its implementation, helping take ownership stewardship processes sites. This systematic literature review explores state art regarding citizen stakeholder participation in nature-based (NBS). search on SCOPUS database identified 142 papers total that met inclusion criteria. analysis was separated two areas: (a) perceptions, preferences, perspectives stakeholders, (b) process, including opportunities, motivations, frameworks, collaborative governance. results revealed or collaboration is increasingly recognized as promising; however, research several related domains still lacking.

Amplifying the impact of sustainability initiatives to foster transformations in urban and rural contexts, has received increasing attention resilience, social innovation, transitions research. We review literature on amplification frameworks propose an integrative typology eight processes, which aim increase such initiatives. The processes are: stabilizing, speeding up, growing, replicating, transferring, spreading, scaling deep. aggregated these into three categories: amplifying within, out, beyond. This aims stimulate debate from across research areas support transformations. going beyond understanding amplification, focuses only numbers initiatives, by considering how create transformative change.

Nature-based solutions (NBS) find increasing attention as actions to address societal challenges through harnessing ecological processes, yet knowledge gaps exist regarding approaches landscape planning with NBS. This paper aims provide suggestions of how NBS can be conceptualized and applied in practice. We develop a framework for by merging insights from literature case study the Lahn river landscape, Germany. Our relates three key criteria that define NBS, consists six steps planning: Co-define setting, Understand challenges, Create visions scenarios, Assess potential impacts, Develop solution strategies, Realize monitor. Its implementation is guided five principles, namely Place-specificity, Evidence base, Integration, Equity, Transdisciplinarity. Drawing on empirical study, we suggest suitable methods checklist supportive procedures applying Taken together, our facilitate provides further towards mainstreaming.
