Land use change and agricultural management have a considerable impact on land patterns greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in dynamic urbanised landscapes. This study evaluated sustainable allocation strategies line with the European Green Deal. A constrained cellular automata model was employed to assess impacts of Business-as-Usual (BAU), Sharing (LSH), Sparing (LSP) scenarios, using open-access data from Flanders (Belgium). Under BAU, urban expansion reduced unregistered by 495 km2, leading higher GHG despite an 11% increase green space. LSH increased space 36% enhanced landscape diversity, while LSP improved habitat coherence 24%. Livestock-related methane (3.09 Mt CO2e) dominated emissions, comprising more than 75% total, cattle responsible for 73% emissions. Nitrous oxide 1.60 CO2e 1.44 1.43 (LSP), 1.42 (LSH) CO2e. Forest sequestration offset up 34% total removing −1.35 Deal measures mitigated all achieving highest gains. Whether China can achieve the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) largely depends on ability of main food-producing areas to cope with multiple land use change challenges. Despite fact that Yangtze River basin is one key regions for China’s food security, spatiotemporal dynamics cropland abandonment and recultivation remain unexplored in this region. The present study assesses evolution agricultural system within between 2000 2020 by mapping using MODIS time series cover products. results highlight a widespread process (i.e., 10.5% total area 2020), predominantly Western Sichuan, Eastern Yunnan, Central Jiangxi. Although 70% abandoned situated slopes less than 5°, highest rates are mountainous regions. However, 2020, 74% had been recultivated at least once, whereas half croplands got three years their initial abandonment. Hence, as first studies unravels complex interaction explicit context, it offers (i) scientists novel methodological framework assess issues across large geographical entities, (ii) policy-makers new insights support sustainable transition sector.

This study provides a quantitative analisis of the interactions between urban and rural areas related territorial disparities in European Union (EU). Relevant societal themes such as population changes, access to services, broadband internet connectivity, house prices, tourism land-use/cover flows are examined by mean indicators computed with most recent data at highest spatial resolution. The degree urbanization (cities, towns suburbs, areas) is used identify differences compare EU regions. Results show that remote lagging terms relevant assets compared more urbanized typologies, strong variations from region depending on analysed theme. graphical information applying descriptive statistical analysis multicriteria assessment help decision-making processes. It concludes summarizing important outcomes set policy recommendations.

Landscape appearance is controlled by a range of different environmental and human-induced factors, although there still lack knowledge about the significance individual factors. Our goal was to identify factors that were significant for landscape change in European Alps rank them according their importance. Therefore, we mapped with standardized survey methodology six typical socio-ecological regions strongly differing socio-economic natural conditions. The results clearly showed has taken place all over last 150–200 years, affecting biodiversity ecosystem services (ES). In general, areas used agriculture have decreased regions, particularly traditionally forms (−72.7 % −6.9 %). greatest decrease took high elevation, agriculturally unfavourable (-72.6 −41.6 %) weak economic conditions (−62.9 −20.9 forest spread on large scale abandoned land economically strong but also settlements monotone intensively cultures. As consequence changes, plant species diversity declined, favourable good site (−62.7 −7.2 %), while it far less (−20.1 −0.7 Regulation & maintenance cultural ESs decreased, whereas provisioning ES generally increased. regional framework play much more important role development than national frameworks. Higher "green subsidies" reduced intensification trend agriculture, led increased abandonment. addition, remained diverse, declined many This demonstrates interpreting historical dynamics analysing impacts can be valuable guide sustainable decision-making processes.

Abstract Climate change can have a negative impact on agricultural production and food security. Vice versa, practices themselves contribute to climate because of land, water, energy use anthropogenic emissions greenhouse gasses waste. The European Green Deal focusses “transition sustainable system that has neutral or positive environmental impact, helps mitigate adapt its reverses the loss biodiversity”. Local feed proteins in Union may result new agro-ecosystem services be integrated maximize sustainability practices. Feed crops with nutritional properties are both beneficial functional biodiversity, biocontrol, pollination, other ecosystem incorporated into livestock diets. However, implementation is hampered by lack information, embedded habits specialization, profit maximization priorities, awareness about impacts existing systems, flow resources between sectors. When economic benefits from investments not immediately evident, transition only successful government policies focus providing knowledge education, financial support. To convince agriculturists workers adopt practices, policy changes needed close cooperation between, support from, all actors involved, including producers, non-governmental civil society organisations, retail industry.

It is characterized possibility integrating 27 criteria addressing issue production processes in frame three pillars: nutritional, environmental, social sustainability. conceived as holistic front-of-pack (FOP) label, complete applicable it based on measurable criteria, widely shared stakeholders, but usually adopted an individual basis.

Farming systems in marginal or less favored areas of Europe have faced a multitude challenges as response to so-called "mega-trends". A typical has been land abandonment. The focus this paper is on the farming Greek islands Lesvos and Lemnos. These neighboring are geographically very similar but differ greatly their systems, resulting different responses same megatrends. While abandonment widespread small-scale olive groves Lesvos, Lemnos specialization towards animal dairy products more common. We performed cover analysis interviews with farmers both areas, two complementing rounds: one quantitative that recorded recent changes farmer rationales qualitative investigated longer term trends decision-making patterns. revealed that, among others, ownership inheritance patterns matter ways, leading diverse trajectories. On Lemnos, part traditional mixed-farming system (Mandra), leasing dominant, separating users landowners. Interviews also reveal symbolic capital, trees considered family asset not just use, something cannot be said leased grazing lands market value important, trajectories demonstrate how behind mega-trends can guide which will dominant area. This article highlights complexity mix local drivers global drive at farm landscape scales guides formulation application agricultural policies public resources for improved management areas.
