ABSTRACT Global microplastic (MP) pollution is now well recognized, with humans and animals consuming inhaling MPs on a daily basis. Herein we described the effects of azide-free, 1 µm polystyrene MP beads co-delivered into lungs SARS-CoV-2 omicron BA.5 inoculum using mouse model mild COVID-19. Lung virus titres viral RNA levels were not significantly affected by MPs, overt clinical or histopathological changes also observed. However, RNA-Seq infected revealed that exposure suppressed innate immune responses at 2 days post infection (dpi) increased pro-inflammatory signatures 6 dpi. The cytokine profile dpi showed significant correlation ‘cytokine release syndrome’ signature seen in some severe COVID-19 patients. This study adds to growing body literature suggesting can dysregulate inflammation specific disease settings. Graphical Abstract HIGHLIGHTS A single inoculation microplastics dysregulated lung At peak decreased early Later promoted “cytokine syndrome” key mechanism may involve inhibition phagocytosis cells Azide-free used, no elevated ROS identified Postulated mechanisms whereby might decrease proinflammatory after infection, yet promote infection.

Microplastics are found in various human tissues and considered harmful, raising concerns about exposure to microplastics the environment. Existing research has analyzed indoor occupational scenarios, but long-term monitoring of ambient atmospheric (AMPs), especially highly polluted urban regions, needs be further investigated. This study estimated environmental AMPs by considering inhalation, dust ingestion, dermal three functional zones within a megacity. The annual quantity was 7.37 × 104 items for children 1.06 105 adults, comparable with microplastic consumption from food water. Significant spatiotemporal differences were observed characteristics that humans exposed to, wind speed rainfall frequency mainly driving these changes. AMP green land spaces, which recognized as relatively low zones, public service residential zones. Notably, significant positive correlations between pathogenicity airborne bacterial community discovered. size immune-mediated disease risks brought microbes showed most relationship, where Sphingomonas might act potential key mediator.

Abstract Background The global use of plastic materials has undergone rapid expansion, resulting in the substantial generation degraded and synthetic microplastics nanoplastics (MNPs), which have potential to impose significant environmental burdens cause harmful effects on living organisms. Despite this, detrimental impacts MNPs exposure towards host cells tissues not been thoroughly characterized. Results In present study, we elucidated a previously unidentified hepatotoxic effect 20 nm polystyrene nanoparticles (PSNPs), rather than larger PS beads, by selectively inducing necroptosis macrophages. Mechanistically, PSNPs were rapidly internalized macrophages accumulated mitochondria, where they disrupted mitochondrial integrity, leading heightened production reactive oxygen species (mtROS). This elevated mtROS essentially triggered macrophages, enhanced crosstalk with hepatocytes, ultimately hepatocyte damage. Additionally, it was demonstrated that induced promoted acute liver injury mice. significantly mitigated administration inhibitor or systemic depletion prior injection. Conclusion Collectively, our study suggests profound toxicity PSNP triggering macrophage necroptosis, turn induces hepatotoxicity via intercellular between hepatocytes hepatic microenvironment.

Over the last few decades, there has been a growing discourse surrounding environmental and health issues stemming from drinking water discharge of effluents into environment. The rapid advancement various sewage treatment methodologies prompted thorough exploration promising materials to capitalize on their benefits. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), as porous materials, have garnered considerable attention researchers in recent years. These boast exceptional properties: unparalleled porosity, expansive specific surface areas, unique electronic characteristics including semi-conductivity, versatile affinity for organic molecules. attributes fueled spike research activity. This paper reviews current MOF-based wastewater removal technologies, separation, catalysis, related pollutant monitoring methods, briefly introduces basic mechanism some methods. scale production problems faced by MOF applications are evaluated, two pioneering methods mass highlighted. In closing, we propose targeted recommendations future perspectives navigate challenges implementation purification, enhancing efficiency material synthesis stewardship.

Abstract This comprehensive review explores microplastic (MP) contamination in food and Incorporating nanotechnology into packaging. It covers origins, pathways, health consequences, analytical challenges. Microplastics (MPs), which are generation due to the breaking down of plastic garbage, presents significant dangers both environment human health. These small particles, sometimes unseen unaided eye, can accumulation ecosystems, harm wildlife, even entering chain, potentially cause issues for humans who consuming contaminated or water. Exposure occurs through ingesting MPs food, notably processed foods, canned goods, infant milk powder, raising concerns about breast cancer. Nanotechnology packaging enhances characteristics but raises migration risks, introducing substances such as phthalates (PAEs), non-PAEs plasticizers (NPPs), bisphenols (BPs), metal nanoparticles, posing risks. Microwavable containers release intentionally included inadvertently substances. Consumer attitudes toward positive, driven by perceived benefits. Analytical techniques MP detection, including micro-Raman spectroscopy hyperspectral imaging, face challenges like sample preparation. Multidisciplinary approaches collaboration crucial complex analysis diverse matrices. The paper discusses body, noting its presence placentas, bodily fluids, lower limb joints, questions. Despite understanding full impact, standardized methods urgently needed. holistic view underscores necessity safeguarding safety public against pervasive environmental issues.

Airborne microplastics pose a significant risk to human health. Similarly the water-air transfer process, such as sea spray, aerosols generated during wastewater treatment driven by aeration and mechanical agitation, are an overlooked potential source of airborne microplastics. This study constitutes first attempt investigate pollution characteristics in treatment, based on laser direct infrared spectroscopy (LDIR) pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS). Microplastics were ubiquitously observed from each unit plant, with abundances range 0.83-28.03 items·m-3. A total 30 different polymer types identified LDIR, while polyvinyl chloride polyethylene terephthalate most common polymers. Film fragment main shapes, predominant size 20-50 μm. The aerosolization degree is affected intensities hydrodynamic conditions maintained unit, but also varied depending their inherent characteristics. These findings suggest that contributes novel insight into occurrence treatment.
