The precise monitoring of extremely deadly volatile organic compounds based on aromatic hydrocarbons such as benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene (BTEX) is desired for indoor air quality. Due to their unique morphology, tunable architectures, mesoporous structure, compositions, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted substantial interest in the fabrication ultra-sensitive selective-based gas sensors. This because exceptional characteristics, like specific adsorption affinities, vastly diversified structures, bulky surface area, functionalized sites. Thus, current review reports recent developments design, synthesis, properties MOF-derived semiconductor metal oxides (SMOs). Moreover, SMO-based sensors toxic vapours, BTEX compounds, environmental quality applications also discussed. sensing mechanisms associated with detection are highlighted detail. It further deliberates advances integration smartphones, Internet Things (IoT), self-powered pave way cost-efficient portable BTEX. concludes by summarizing accomplishments challenges, delivering a forthcoming viewpoint advancement next-generation MOF-based real-world environments.
