Since the heating and cooling sectors consume most of energy in Europe through fossil fuels, transition to a low-carbon sustainable system is crucial. Underground Thermal Energy Storage (UTES) systems, such as aquifer thermal storage (ATES) borehole (BTES), offer promising solutions by enabling seasonal renewable energy, balancing mismatch between supply demand. ATES BTES systems store excess heat or cold for later use, making them suitable large-scale applications like residual from industrial power generation processes offering flexibility cooling. This review explores geological hydrogeological requirements pointing out importance basic knowledge, laboratory field investigations, operational monitoring optimize their performance. The study highlights need Slovenia use experiences other European nations overcome initial challenges, develop effective site evaluation methods, integrate these into existing infrastructure.

The conversion and storage of renewable energy into thermal is an important part the low carbon economy. goaf a deep mine offers possibility large-scale due to its sufficient underground space. Since repositories are built inside backfill there few studies on their heat capacity effectiveness, this paper builds experimental platform based similarity theory selects geometric ratio 1:15 study phase change performance storage. Under typical operating conditions, temperature distribution PCM cylindrical unit was analyzed. At end storage, 0.93–0.98, but at release, not uniform. same time, reasonably corrected, so that charging effectiveness increased 0.98, total charge discharge remains 0.87. parameters analyzed in detail by changing water temperature, flow velocity release time circulating medium. results show when constant only changed, higher discharge. On contrary, reduced 14 °C, 7.5%. When state transition, decreases. longer storage/release smaller TSTDave more uniform distribution. By restoring data engineering prototype, installed were able store extract 422.88 GJ 375.97 heat, respectively. Finally, environmental assessment C-LHSU showed emissions per heating area CFB, GWHF GHF 88.1%, 84.2% 83.0%, reservoir has transfer efficiency, which provides theoretical basis reference for efficient utilization goafs.

Geothermal energy represents a promising sustainable power source that harnesses Earth's natural heat through water circulation systems. A critical challenge in geothermal generation is controlling the heating process formation of cracks hot zones. This requires an innovative thermal switch or reversible proppant can regulate flow and ensure optimal absorption before extraction for electricity generation. In this study, we designed synthesized composite with polymeric artificial muscle embedded fluoroelastomer matrix. design, protects from superhot (200 °C above) damage also provides tensile stress to muscle; desired actuation. poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-bexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) was cross-linked by dicumyl peroxide (DCP) form PVDF-HFP/DCP. Nylon fiber twisted until it used coil as muscle. Under zero external loading, exhibited maximum contraction upon (CUH) about 10.76% expansion cooling (EUC) 10.89% when temperature cycled 25 200 °C. Furthermore, CUH EUC were 2.12 3.36%, respectively, 150 The still excellent actuation chemical stability after soaking within pressure vessel 4 weeks. design-oriented structural mechanics model developed evaluate various design parameters on smart switch. To further highlight performance PVDF-HFP/DCP, prepared three other fluorinated rubbers controls. shows promise valve enhanced systems, offering potential improve efficiency controlled fracture conductivity.
