As a key soil carbon process, changes in plant root growth may have dramatic impact on the global ecosystem’s cycle. Fine functional traits and fine biomass can be used as important indexes of growth. Compared with much better understood relationships between aboveground biomass, knowledge belowground still remains limited. In this study, roots 30 abandoned lands, 9 woodlands, 29 alfalfa grasslands, Caragana shrublands croplands were sampled at 0–20 20–40 cm depths Zhonglianchuan, Yuzhong County, Gansu Province, China (36°02′ N, 104°24′ E), to clarify characteristics (e.g., diameter, specific area (SRA) length (SRL)) depths. The results showed that these ecosystems robust, allowing for use an allometric model both (p < 0.05). Specifically, relationship diameter was consistent highly significant positive power, while negative power SRA SRL observed 0.01, except diameter–biomass models woodlands layer = 0.017) 0.025)). provide some parameters terrestrial ecosystem process models. From perspective, our study is beneficial construction suitable strategies increase which will help restoration semi-arid region Loess Plateau China.

Evapotranspiration (E), a pivotal phenomenon inherent to hydrological and thermal dynamics, assumes position of utmost importance within the intricate framework water–energy nexus. However, quantitative study E on large scale for “Grain Green” projects under backdrop climate change is still lacking. Consequently, this examined interannual variations spatial distribution patterns E, transpiration (Et), soil evaporation (Eb) in Northern Foot Yinshan Mountain (NFYM) between 2000 2020 quantified contributions vegetation greening changes Et, Eb. Results showed that (2.47 mm/a, p < 0.01), Et (1.30 Eb (1.06 0.01) all exhibited significant increasing trend during 2000–2020. Notably, emerged as predominant impetus underpinning augmentation both Eb, augmenting their rates by 0.49 mm/a 0.57 respectively. In terms meteorological factors primary catalysts, with temperature (Temp) assuming role at rate 0.35 mm/a. Temp, Precipitation (Pre), leaf area index (LAI) collectively dominated proportional accounting shares 32.75%, 28.43%, 25.01%, Within spectrum drivers influencing Temp exerted most substantial influence, commanding largest proportion 33.83%. For preeminent determinants were recognized LAI constituting portion area, 32.10% 29.50%, The pronounced direct influence no effects bare Wind speed (WS) had impact Et. Pre strong Relative humidity (RH) significantly affected directly. primarily influenced indirectly through radiation (Rad). Rad inhibitory effect These findings advanced our mechanistic understanding how its components NFYM respond greening, thus providing robust basis formulating strategies related regional ecological conservation water resources management, well supplying theoretical underpinnings constructing sustainable restoration involving region.

The evaporation of soil water drives the upward movement salt and its accumulation on surface, which ultimately leads to salinization in agroecosystems. With rapid development remote sensing technology, transport can be monitored accurately. Based Landsat 8 satellite imagery ERA5-Land reanalysis datasets, this study explored variation characteristics northeast Tibetan Plateau from 2013 2023, inferred by geostatistical methods like ridge regression, windowed cross correlation, machine learning algorithms. results show that negative correlation effect between deep moisture (100–289 cm) is stronger. Moreover, also have a time lag compared with instant responses, meaning caused may require longer times. As potential driving factors, an increase organic carbon runoff beneficial for alleviating while abundant promotes humidification. This has elucidated specific regulation within different profiles, understanding ecological balance

Plant secondary compounds (PSCs) were thought to be waste products of plant metabolism when first identified in the mid-1800s. Since then, many different roles have been recognized for these chemicals. With regards their function as defense, PSCs can negatively impact cellular and metabolic processes herbivore, causing illness reductions feed intake. This penalty on fitness also applies other trophic levels, like microorganisms parasites that infect herbivores thus, at certain doses may medicines. In turn, evolved learning mechanisms cope with constant variability environment physiological needs. Under this context, foraging viewed quest substances external provide homeostatic utility animal. For instance, increase preference PSC-containing feeds infectious agents (i.e., therapeutic self-medication). Given some classes polyphenols present antioxidant, antiinflammatory, immunomodulatory prebiotic properties, chronic sustained consumption chemicals results robust animals are tolerant disease prophylactic Foraging plasticity terms quality quantity nutrients ingested absence during sickness influence immunocompetence, resistance resilience infection, thus interpreted another form medication. Finally, self-medicative behaviors transmitted through social learning. We suggest studies will benefit from exploring chemically diverse communities, particular considering vast diversity structures (more than 200,000) observed nature. then lay out a framework enhancing medicinal effects grazing herbivores. propose landscape interventions establishment resource patches or "islands" forages (e.g., legumes, herbs, shrubs) monotonous rangelands pasturelands, "sea" low-diversity vegetation devoid functional biochemicals. Strategies aimed communities lead heterogeneity chemical, structural traits offer options foragers, allow balanced diets maintain restore health. Beyond animal health, such promotes broad array ecosystem services significantly improve environmental disturbances.

Soil moisture plays a crucial role in various hydrological processes and energy partitioning of the global surface. The Moisture Active Passive-Sentinel (SMAP-Sentinel) remote-sensing technology has demonstrated great potential for monitoring soil with maximum spatial resolution 1 km. This capability can be applied to improve weather forecast accuracy, enhance water management agriculture, managing climate-related disasters. Despite techniques being increasingly used worldwide, their accuracy still requires field validation specific regions like Thailand. In this paper, we report on extensive situ (from surface up m depth) at 10 stations across Thailand, spanning years 2021 2023. aim was validate SMAP surface-soil (SSM) Level 2 product over period two years. Using one-month averaging approach, study revealed linear relationships between measurement types, coefficient determination (R-squared) varying from 0.13 0.58. Notably, areas more uniform land use topography such as croplands tended have better determination. We also conducted detailed core characterization, including soil-water retention curves, permeability, porosity, other physical properties. basic properties were estimating correlation constants moistures using multiple regression. results produced R-squared values 0.933 0.847. An upscaling approach proposed that showed promising when 3-month average all measurements cropland together. finding suggests SMAP-Sentinel exhibits significant soil-moisture certain applications. Further efforts research, particularly terms root-zone depths area-based assessments, especially agricultural sector, greatly technology's effectiveness usefulness region.
