Microalgae have emerged as an interesting alternative for the generation of biofuels, including bioethanol, biodiesel, biomethane, biohydrogen and syngas. They are also used production biofertilizers other products interest, while acting a CO2 sink favoring water purification by absorbing nutrients. However, economic viability large-scale microalgae cultivation any these purposes is not yet reality. One main factors affecting this refers to growing phase. In scenario, nanoparticles, e.g. metallic, emerging possible alternatives improve harvesting microalgae. The addition certain nanoadditives in microalgal cultures can light conversion photobioreactor, well absorption performance. way which nanoparticles act or concentration at they maximize their positive effects on culture aspects that remain unclear. Thus, paper critically reviews recent advances nanoparticulate additives when supplement cultures, with specific objective improving production, but analyzing effect algal growth, lipid accumulation capture. selection metabolic pathways potential toxicity reviewed. reported studies reveal depends concentration, typology (chemical nature, particle size, crystalline structure) species Furthermore, supplementation clearly increases intracellular compounds interest growth algae.
