The recast of the Renewable Energy Directive (RED II) provides an enabling framework for "Renewable Communities" (RECs) that is being transposed into law by 27 European Union Member States June 2021. RECs are majority owned local members or shareholders who authorized to share energy within community, offering potential unlock private investment and financing renewable sources provide social benefits. However, successful implementation a just transition requires coupling technological solutions with more open decision making, based on sound analysis, knowledge engineering, spatial planning, science. We argue ownership models address complementarity, organization resource potential, demographics, pushback from incumbents, inclusion traditionally marginalized groups, common issues across all crucial transposition RED II transition. This paper highlights benefits challenges widespread development RECs, using examples pending process policy advice effective respect RECs.

'Energy democracy' has evolved from a slogan used by activists demanding greater say in energy-related decision-making to term policy documents and scholarly literature on energy governance transitions. This article reviews the academic using combination of three methodological elements: (1) keyword searches major bibliographical databases for quantification purposes; (2) an innovative method referred as 'circulation tracing' assess impact; (3) in-depth discussion theoretical underpinnings, implications interconnections different parts literature. A conceptual framework is developed around divergent understandings 'energy democracy': process driven forwards popular movement; outcome decarbonisation; goal or ideal which stakeholders aspire. The review also highlights some weaknesses literature: fragmentation between its European American branches, barely relate each other; implicit absent linkages broader theories democracy; tendency idealise societal grassroots; confusion about roles state, private capital communities; lack attention threat posed populism. Proponents should not assume that more democracy will inherently mean faster decarbonisation, improved access social wellbeing. Finally, emphasis be placed role research providing evidence ground democracy-related analyses discussions.

Strong governance is vital for developing environmental policies to promote renewable energy consumption and discourage nonrenewable sources. The present research explores the effect of economic growth different indicators on in Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka using data from 1996 2019. For this purpose, study uses econometric techniques find long-term effects rule law, regulatory quality, corruption control, government effectiveness, political stability, voice accountability, oil, natural gas, coal, hydroelectricity, consumption. results show that has a positive impact all investigated Additionally, quality measures also increase types Except law negative, effectiveness positively affects Control gas Political stability negative sources magnitudes most are found be larger than testing nexus scant global literature missing South Asian literature. Hence, contribute how economies can more sustainable use by enhancing economies. Particularly, imply these countries should focus improving governance, help maintain balance Moreover, issue needs further attention countries, as would play an effective role promoting energy.

Digitalization is a megatrend that affects and transforms societal, economic, environmental processes on global scale. Driven by combination of technological advances as well shifting societal demands, digitalization also the operation planning electricity sector. This paper uses analysis framework to analyze phenomena, its regional differences, technologies, use cases challenges. It highlights potential system-level benefits (e.g., increased efficiency, transparency, consumer participation) challenges demand growth, autonomy loss, increasing cyber risks) currently reported in literature. Eventually, building thorough analysis, we present menu policy options exploit full digitalized systems while mitigating adverse effects decarbonization goals consumers.

Inclusive innovation addresses the challenges and aspirations of poor marginalised groups in society. Attention towards these is also important for social justice sustainable transitions. How can research insights from inclusive contribute to just transitions? In this paper, based on original mixed methods data, analysis built around levels inclusion applied empirically case smart local energy systems UK. Despite innovators acknowledging inclusiveness as significant their decarbonised, decentralised digitalised transition goals, operates currently at low owing prevalence a liberal-individualist approach electricity regime. Noting efforts (and constraints) higher-level some demonstration projects, we discuss whether how social-collectivist approaches open up more transformative possibilities. The illustrates relations between invite transformational policies.

We are in the midst of a global energy system transformation (GEST) which is rewiring world economy, opening new axes political contestation, and revolutionising energetic basis human civilisation. Energy geopolitics has not yet reconciled itself to this challenge. The field traditionally been preoccupied with dependence Western states on cross-border flows fossil fuels. More recently, efforts have made prospectively map out what fully renewable might look like. What both literatures miss, however, very fact GEST: that we living through changing contested process transformation, across interacting high- low-emissions systems, whose contours open actively constructed over time.
