The rapid increase in population and economic activities has greatly influenced land use spatial development. In urban agglomerations where socioeconomic are densely concentrated, the clash between ecological protection growth is becoming more evident. Therefore, a thorough quantitative assessment of changes driven by dynamics, alongside an examination temporal driving factors, crucial offering scientific backing for long-term sustainable agglomerations. This paper focuses on major China’s Yangtze River Delta region, examining spatiotemporal evolution landscape patterns from 2000 to 2020. By employing standard deviation ellipse technique, coupled with multiple linear regression geographical detector model, we conduct directional trends construction expansion as well diverse impacts factors this across various periods regions. findings indicate that over past 20 years, Urban Agglomeration expanded concentrated patches, showing significant scale effects relatively intact farmland forest being increasingly encroached upon. Landscape-type transitions predominantly occurred cities around Taihu Lake Hangzhou Bay, most transition converted land, resulting greater number patches pronounced fragmentation. Throughout shifted, predominant trending northwest toward southeast, EN orientation intense area, covering 1641.24 km2. influence differed study thoroughly examines affect valuable evidence references future planning development Agglomeration, aiding formulation precise efficient management strategies.

Understanding urban expansion's spatial and temporal evolution is crucial for sustainable development. Previous research primarily focuses on two-dimensional perspectives, overlooking vertical This study investigates three-dimensional expansion in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH), Yangtze River Delta (YRD), Pearl (PRD) from 1998 to 2018 using Local Climate Zone (LCZ) data, standard deviation ellipse, compactness indicators, landscape ecology techniques. Findings reveal that BTH showed minimal variation direction. YRD predominantly expanded northwest. PRD eastward. Scattered patches with declining density characterize areas. Open lowrise buildings dominate the YRD, while transitioned compact open buildings. The increase corresponds rising complexity fragmentation. highrise buildings, though dominant, show a gradual decrease. offers comprehensive insights into dynamics of expansion, aiding developing more habitable efficient cities.

Understanding the interactions between human sphere and natural in key places regions of world is crucial for promoting sustainability science achieving sustainable development. As one emerging global city-regions China Global South, Yangtze River Delta (YRD) plays an increasingly nonnegligible role globalized economy telecoupling social-ecological systems (SESs). Considering well-known importance representativeness, YRD has been regarded as appropriate experimental site integrated research on geographical at subnational scale. This paper tries to establish theoretical practical linkages regional integration development scale based goals (SDGs), Chinese contexts, a literature review relevant researches. We argue that future should pay more attention interdisciplinary, transregional, multi-scale attributes issues related YRD. The following agendas, such linking SDGs integrative development, analyzing SESs, assessing region scale, investigating different scales, exploring applicable governance structures institutions, well applying multi-source data interdisciplinary methodologies, call scholarly attention. hope this could be initial motion expand enrich research.
