Abstract We present a new study examining the dynamics of global urban building growth rates over past three decades. By combining datasets for 1,550+ cities from several space-borne sensors—data scatterometers and settlement-built fraction based on Landsat-derived data—we find profound shifts in how expanded 1990s to 2010s. Cities had both increasing fractional cover microwave backscatter (correlating with volume), but decades, decreased most regions large cities, while increased essentially all cities. The divergence increase these metrics indicates shift lateral expansion more vertical development. Increasing urban land use eco-efficiency (ULUEE) is conducive to alleviating the human-land conflict in cities, especially densely populated and ecologically sensitive areas. ULUEE research past has been less focused on different river basins from a comparative perspective, largely ignored regional heterogeneity driving factors. Thus, this study aims compare spatiotemporal dynamics factors of Yangtze River Economic Belt (YREB) Yellow Basin (YRB) China. The was first evaluated using Slack Based Model-Undesirable, then Theil Index spatial Markov Chain were used reveal differential changes shifting direction ULUEE, followed by an analysis segments sized cities Tobit model. Results show that: (1) both YREB YRB, shows characteristic "lower reaches > middle upper reaches", however, notable differences index values are evident among basin segments. (2) exhibits spillovers convergence phenomena during its variations. (3) There significant U-shaped relationship between GDP whole YREB, but only lower YRB. Additionally, form environmental regulations have heterogeneous impacts different-sized cities. In order maintain sustainability resource management coordinate city development varying sizes, governments must take systematic approach that accounts for complexity characteristics drivers ULUEE.

This paper contributes to the understanding of recent urban development Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Previous studies have aimed at quantifying city’s spatial growth yet disregarded its inherent morphological and socio-economic heterogeneity. To overcome this knowledge gap, we employ an structure type approach for spatially explicit quantification urbanisation patterns period 2010–⁠2020, categorising 77,000 blocks across entire administrative area 2095 km2. The allows us understand basic underlying processes urbanisation, both quantitatively qualitatively, main corridors along rural–urban gradient. By contextualizing combining our findings within current literature official planning reports, discern between traditional contemporary new town patterns, highlighting their driving forces policy implications. Incremental plot-by-plot northwest corridor is observed as principal mode development, whilst bypass seen eastern southern corridors. Our block-based results highlight key challenges provide insights on a scale that meaningful infrastructure planning, periodic analysis monitoring. As far authors are aware, first time was applied rapid dynamics emerging megacity in Southeast Asia.
